Awesome! Looks like hard candy!:D
Mangled badges - what to do?
Very nice! Are you sure you don't want a back-up snare that has been restored by the master?LoLoLoLo
The bass is a 3 ply. Big, booming sounds from some unassuming drums! If you want to make it a little more stable sounding, you can sand the interiors af all the drums smooth and apply a coat or two of clear lacquer. If you do, please, use lacquer, not polyurethane. Poly is a plastic coating and will change the tone to a less natural wood sound. The lacquer will not only brighted the sound a little (not much)but will also help to preserve them for the next 45++ years and another generation of drummers and collectors.

Here's a couple pictures of the inside of the drums - the bass drum in particular.

And thanks for all the info/advice there, Jonni.
So you use lacquer on the insides after sanding, hey? (I have some tung oil around...is that stuff any good for the inside of drums?)
What do you use to clean and spiff up the outside of the drum - the wrap itself? And the bass drum hoops are a bit chipped up, they seem to be just painted flat black, but is that actually the case?
Also, I'm missing the cymbal stand that goes in the bracket on the bass drum - any ideas how to find/make a replacement?
And thanks for all the info/advice there, Jonni. So you use lacquer on the insides after sanding, hey? (I have some tung oil around...is that stuff any good for the inside of drums?)MAny people use Tung Oil. I use lacquer because I like the overall finished product. It gives a sheen and will, in time, honey very nicely. It is my preference, use of tung is perfectl acceptable, but it does nothing for the overall aesthetics. Just personal taste I suppose. What do you use to clean and spiff up the outside of the drum - the wrap itself? Typically I just scrub the outside with mild dish soap, damp cloth and lot's of elbow grease. Then I do something no one else does, I use Eagle One Wet Wax. It is a liquid car finish that you spray on. I spray a little water on the wrap and then the Eagle One, rub it down and polish. Looks amazing and leaves a smooth, clear hard finish. And the bass drum hoops are a bit chipped up, they seem to be just painted flat black, but is that actually the case? They would have been gloss black with an inlay of the original wrap. If the inlay is in good shape, carefully tape it oof completely, lightly sand the paint and carefully re-spray it them in gloss. Also, I'm missing the cymbal stand that goes in the bracket on the bass drum - any ideas how to find/make a replacement? You can order one from online. I am looking for one, as soon as I find it, I'll let you know.

Thanks again...I'm looking forward to this. I've never really done any woodworking or refinishing before, so the project will probably go slow but I bet it will look great.
I'm on the fence about what to do with the toms - I have two matching 13" toms. (Well, they exactly match finish-wise - one tom has a muffler and the other doesn't) I generally play with a 4 piece set, and I'm not super crazy about having two identical drums up top like that in any case.
You said you have a snare drum in this finish, could you use a 13" tom at all?

Well, if the wrap were trashed, it would be OK, I don't toss off good wrap. There is someone out there looking for that tom. You likely can tune one higher than the other, and since one has a muffler, it is a good bet this would be the best way to tune, or leave it off altogether.
This wrap, while not highly sought after, is a "rarer" (I hate that word) color. Your snare, is it the same shell construction as the toms and bass? The reason I ask is the one I have is a 6 lug, thin shell. If your snare is a thicker shell, then this one will have a completely different tone. Much deeper and woodier. If yours is a thin, then it likely is a beast to tune because it may well not have snare beds. Before you do any major work, let me know what your pln is and I will get you started in the right direction, you don't want to get lost or discouraged. Don't take more than one drum apart at a time.

No no, the wrap is perfect on all of the drums, including both 13" toms.
And good point on the tuning, that would work, it's true.
I certainly don't want to get rid of a tom or leave it off for no reason - feels wasteful - BUT if there's anyone you know, or anyone out there in the forum that's looking for a 13" tom in this finish, let me know. I'd be happy to oblige...
Also, I am fairly sure that the snare is the same as all the other drums...but the one thing I am missing is the strainer 'rod' (the thing that you move to turn the snares on/off). Any idea where one can find those?
And I'll ask your advice re: the drum restoration/improvements, since you seem to be the resident guru.
Should I just send a pm I guess?
