Mangled badges - what to do?

Loading...

Hey all,

First post here, so go easy on me... :S

Just picked up a MIJ set this past weekend (a "Tempo" set), and unfortunately only one of the badges is intact - the others have been sort of bent and broken off, leaving sharp, jagged edges.

I was wondering what I should do with them...remove the broken badges completely? Try to 'trim' them, and leave them in the hole? What?

Any sggestions?

thanks.

Can you post some pix of the interiors and extiors and the gromeets so we can better understand? If they are damaged, I wouls remove them, but proper technique os vital so as not to damage the wrap and shells.

Thanks guys - I'll take some pictures when I get home today. I would like them removed too, I think, but I have no idea about the proper technique.

Here's some pictures of the badges. The broken ones:

And a whole one:

And here's how they are attached:

Actually...now that I look at these, the broken ones aren't the same as the 'Tempo' badge, are they? Weird...

Wow...I happen to have a freshly restored and ready to rock matching snare drum for you.

Anyway, this is the easiest way to remove these remnants. First, very carefully take a small screwdriver and lift the edges of the little tabs. Carefully push the grommet through the hole and pull it out. Remove the grommet from the remnant and push it back into the vent hole, re-bend the tabs and you are done.

This color is called Fibre Gold Pearl, and these are Star drums. Can you post some pix of the interiors please? The broken badges look like thye could have been Majestic Deluxxe badges. Anyway, the one drum appears to have a re-ring and that would indicate a 3 ply shell. Do all the shells match? Are they all 3 ply, thin shells with re-rings in them?

Thanks for the tips, I'll do that - I guess the badge is just loose on the grommet, hey?

So Star drums, hey? I actually have the matching snare and everything - it's all in pretty good shape, too. I'll take some pics tomorrow so you can confirm the stuff about the shell interiors.

Actually, the two brands makes some sense - I have a 22" bass, 14" snare, 16" floor tom, and TWO 13" mounted toms. The one has the broken (Star) badge and the other has the intact "Tempo" badge. The thing is, they are an exact match in wrap and everything...I wonder how it ended up that way.

Well, they are "stencils". In the 60s and 70s, Pearl and Star, now known as TAMA, built millions of drums and sold them to distributors who then had the name badges attached by the factory, hence for the Star drums, most from this era are Slingerland copies, black and brass badges, lugs, most hardware. They had over 150 "name brands", all made by the two big companies and distributed here by a few big suppliers and sold to music stores.

Interesting thing is, you could have 5 music stores in a 3 mile radius and they all had the exact same drums, all with different names. This kit, although badged as a Tempo, is made by Star. The broken badges look like Majestics to me. Again, same drums, different badges.

I also think the missing badges are "Majestic"...Ones missing are silver in color with the letters in black and semi-pro on bottom of badge...Majestic also had a badge that was brass in color letters in black but had de luxe on bottom....If you need the badges Email me ..Thanks Mikey
