Star Drums Finished

Yes sirree, all of these early Star and Pearl 3 ply drums sound like this. And you are correct, this type of shell construction is the boominest, lowest toned sound you can get, they are simply amazing i there tone. The bass drums are without equal as far as the low, resonant boom goes. Many drummers gop through their careers turning their noses up at these "fire hazards" and think their "insert brand" sounds like thunder....but when we tell them how great, they tell us we have damaged brains and ears...hehehe let 'em think what they will....

I have spent a couple more hours on the snare today. Started all over with the tuning. I have it tuned pretty close, changed the wires, this snare has a lot of RING to it. Did not realize how bad it was until my son was on the kit and I heard it from the other room (ringing over tones big time) Well Jonni, what is those 2 WORDS you mentioned in a earlier post?

Well, ringy is one word to define them. What is the cause, that is the question. It is usually, on these, the hoops. Do you perchance have another 6 lug snare? Exchange the hoops and see if that helps. And what heads? I'm trying to recall what I did to get rid of it in one of mine. When I get it, I'll totter back over...And if you are trying to tune up, it ain't gonna sound too good. That could be the reason, trying to tune it too high. And keep the muffler engaged, that will help.

Well jonni, it is an 8 lugger. Remo coated ambassador on batter, tama thin clear on the snare side. I tuned the batter to a "C" note and the snare side a little lower. It don`t sound that bad while the playing it , but 20 feet away it is quite noticeable.

Hmmm....makes no sense. The edges are rounded, the heads are OK, I don't know...I wish I could put my hands on it. If I could I would be able to diagnose it in a flat minute. Ok, I don't tune to a "note". I tune to even tone all the way around the head. I am wondering if maybe the res is too tight? Have you tried starting from loose and tuning the bottom to one full turn over finger tight? Then tap around the the head to make sure it is evenly tuned, then go to the top and start doind the same thing. I know we can get this ring out. Do you have another 8 lugger you can take the top hoop from? I know this is a pain for most people, but I have a screw gun and a lug driver and it takes 2 minute to change a head...

Let's work through this. You got a yahoo account and a microphone? In other words, can you voice chat?

Once you get the bottom sorted out and evenly tight, go to the top and work it up. Go here to get a good lesson. Please, don't take this as a snyde or snotty comment that you don't know what you are doing, nothing like that. This video series has taken my tuning ability to places I never knew before. The snare seems to be the one we are having trouble sorting out, so let's break it down to it's basics. Follow this to a tee and you might get it heading in the right direction.

Yeah, I prefer to get to the root of the problem though. It just bugs me to get this deep into it and have this problem. Monn Gels are good, but I want to get the ring gone, at least as much as possible. Have you switched the hoop to see if there is a problem there? And where is that video? Don't be shy, I suck, my "playing" is wicked bad...more beating thatn actual playing, but it gets the point across. You can still hear the tones and see just how good my drums sound. My woodies have the perfect balance of tone and very slight, almost indetectable and desirable ring, not the overbearing loud and annoying ring I suspect you are experiencing. There is something I/we are missing, this ring has to be something we have missed, or it could well be the hoops. If you test one from another snare and find it is reduced, then we have the culprit. If not, we eliminate this, at least. Make sure if you do change it out that the one you use is in round and in good shape. New "sticksaver" hoops can be had relatively cheap, if you buy them from www.drumfactorydirect.com

Usually, these have a lower tone than thicker shelled snares.
