This weekend's CL find

I got these 2 (Star?) drum shells off of Craigs List for $5. Now it looks like I'll have a complete set to restore.

Close enough that nobody but my buddy Blake would really care...The new bass is a Star, the outline of the badge is the give away. Pearl did not use that shape badge in the 3 ply era. Lacquer the interiors, put some Remo Encore NOS heads on them and rock the bottom of the scale, these are big ol' boomers. This type and size have deep booming tones.

Thanks Jon, I was wondering what prep was needed for these. Since they came without any lugs do I try to find simular lugs that are on my 2 Toms for them or just buy new lugs all around or get any lugs I can find that work and just put it together? This set is for my nieces (2) and nephew (1) for X-Mas.

That is, if I can get it all done by then ;-)

Let Mikey source them for you. He has more than all the rest of parts guys combined....and we love him for it! I would just go back with the soundking ones. You should be able to get them back together by Thanksgiving.

Head selection is going to be the hard part. These old drums are tough to head up if you have never done them. For the bass, an EQ1 (BD22GB1-C) this is a coated head, but opaque I guess. The toms are the hard part. A good single ply, and you will need to replace all the mufflers that are missing. Tone control can be a bear, but if you lacquer them, they tame down a bit. I personally do not like Remo heads on these shells, but that is my own opinion....and we all have one or three of those. The Evans dry Genera work OK for this shell sometimes as well. But I found these Remo Encore heads, NOS from the 90s, Taiwanese made and they sound soo good.

I have a 6 lug snare that will be ready in a few days. Before you say yes or no, let me tell you, I do sell them for a little more than ebay money, but I work my magic on them first. This one will have new heads (Aquarin Z-100 batter/some white res) and snares, completely detailed by the maestro...I know I am the biggest pain in the a$$ about not over-selling these old drums, but that is in their original state. They just don't sound good until they have been worked. It would match well with this kit, it is Fibre Gold.

From the pics above, it looks like a match to me! Maybe I'd be able to tell up close and personal, but I definitely wouldn't have noticed had it not been pointed out. And anyone else besides us forum dwellers? forget about it.

I'd say you have a great project set on your hands. Once you get the parts and heads all sorted out, I think you'll be surprised at how nice the set will turn out to be. Not to mention the satisfaction you'll get out of rescuing and restoring these 40+ year old drums.

Thanks guys, I just pulled out a box of drum gear I haven't seen seen since the last millenium. LOL. Please see my resent post here. I know the Rogers Pedal shouldn't be there but I did get it with my original R360 set that were non-usa drums that I also got that Frankenstein snare with. What a hodgepodge, eh? But I may be able to make use of some of this stuff.
