Star Drum

First of all I don`t know much about vintage Star drums. I know where a set is for sale and the guy is asking $300 for them. The sizes are 22x16, 12x9, 13x11, 16x16 and there is a 14x5.5 snare(8 lugs). He says they are 3 ply and still has original heads on most of the drums. Does this sound like a reasonable price?

Well, this is perplexing in that they have sticker badges, and the 61-63 lugs. If they are in the condition the pix suggest, then 300 might not be a bad deal. If you can get closer to them and get some good, clear pix of the interior, exterior, stainer, etc...I would play them first before laying out 300. As a collector, this is one of the earliest examples out there, and in good condition, but if they don't sound good, you will have to work on them. As for the price, again...it could be a good deal, only if they prove out to be very early ones. If they are 65 up, not so good, maybe 150, unless all the hardware is present. As for this at 300, it would still need all the original hardware to warrant that price, IMHO...

EDIT: Sticksavers new in '63, and the configuration is not in the catalogs, so it is hard to tell if this is a complete, original or added to kit. Looks like the 13 was added. (SORRY, THE 12 is maybe an add-on at a later time?)

First of all, this lug design is the big indicator. Look at the catalogs link, and look at '61, '63 and '65. These are the formative years for Star, and these could very well be a time caposule kit, but then again, it looks like the hardware is missing, and to me, that is a hit in value. If they need restoration, like they appear to need, the lugs are dirty, looks like maybe some wiped them down and got the dust offf. A deep cleaning is many hours of intensive labor....Again, early ones like this are hard to find, but they may not sound great either. If you have the time and inclination, I would go look at them, even with the drive. Are you in SoCal?

Not with those lugs. The lugs on the snare went away sometime in 63. The lugs most found from 64 on are the "Type A", Sound King copies. Then the tear drop copies on Stewart and Apollo , among others. This snare at least, is an early model. The 12" may have been added at a later time. Check for continuity of lugs. See if you can get some close ups of the lugs and strainer before you go, each tom and the bass.
