Zildjian "Cymbal Snaps" History

Does anyone know when Zildjian first came out with their "cymbal snaps"? I found a reference to a 1966 ad for them here:

Let me know if anyone has info of them being sold earlier than that. I want to know if they would be historically correct to use on a 1963 Slingerland "Krupa" kit.

Early 70's Walnut Slingerland "Mini Krupa Kit" 8X12, 14X14, 16X16, 14X22, 1955 Mahogany 4X13 "Junior" snare with tube lugs & 3 point strainer.

Late 70's Maple Slingerland 6-8-10 concert toms, 8X12, 9X13, 10X14, 16X16, 16X18, 2 - 14X22, COB Krupa & COW Rich snares.

Working on a 70's Maple Slingerland 8X12, 15X15, 16X18, 14X22, "nesting" kit, 1958 Maple Student Radio King.

I would like to save that whole article & read it later.

Does anyone know how you could save all those pages besides slowly "one at a time???"

Well I did read through what was on that link and it does not make any other reference to the cymbal snaps other than the photo and in the bottom right corner it says: "1966 ad for cymbal snaps: Zildjian Archive". This link shows an excerpt from the book "Zildjian: a history of the legendary cymbal makers" By Jon Cohan, so trying to download the whole thing may be impossible anyways.

This is on of those fact finding missions that will take some time to figure out.

Early Zildjian catalog/flyer history is a difficult mission. Basically as a company they were selling cymbals to drum companies directly and not as a company to the general public.

If someone was buying a cymbal they looked through the drum catalogs.

I have not been able to pinpoint when the first consumer catalog was printed.

What I would do is start using Youtube and watching early 60's videos of drummers and watching the cymbal stands. Study early ads and photos of jazz drummers of the time.

Also, there are no patents for this version of the cymbal snap, just the Cordes version that did not have the pivoting section.

A specific answer to a question like this might not be obtainable through normal research

Update

Looking at that page left catalog dated 1963-1964

No mention of snaps or photos in that catalog

David, Thanks for those links to the Zildjian catalogs. The cymbal snaps do show in the 1968 catalog and the reference to the 1966 ad date them at least that far back. Since they are not in the 63/64 catalog the best we can assume is that they came out in 65 or 66 or possibly even 64 since the 63/64 catalog must have come out in 63.

Mid 60'S would be our best "date" given the references we have found so far.

As far as my 1963 Krupa kit is concerned, I'm definately going to leave the "snaps" on all my stands. Don't want to take them off and loose them as they are worth more than gold right now!! Mid 60's is close enough as something like the cymbal snaps would have easily been added over the years. The set has modern Fibeskyn heads on it also and Bosphorus cymbals so it could never be considered a true 1963 rendition.

I just replaced 2 of the flat based cymbal stands that had the 70's plastic knobs with earlier 60's stands with metal "T" knobs. I replaced the 3 leg flat hi-hat stand with a 2 legged one. I replaced the modern throne with an early 60's Slingerland throne. Also I should be recieving the straight legs and replacement mufflers by the end of the week. That will get the kit a lot closer to being early-mid 60's authentic. It's amazing how just these small changes are really giving this kit a truely "vintage vibe".

SO THAT'S WHAT THAT IS! I have one of these on an old stand and never knew exactly what it was, but always loved it because it was lower profile than a regular wing nut.

And those are not even the original Zildjian Snaps!!!! Those I believe were made by some other company. They are a bit shorter, made of chrome plated steel not brass. I have a few of those and they are not as well made as the original Zildjian Snaps.

I have some of those on a few stands. I bought them in the 70's.

I always found that they rattled so I wrap masking tape around them in the straight-up position and use them that way.

I have one that came apart on a gig.I found the oval piece that snaps up and down and a thin wire that goes through both chrome pieces but,the snap piece won't stay up.The oval piece has 2 holes in it .Any idea how to repair this? Thanks
