Gluing shells together?

Loading...

I have 2 identical 10 by 14 OLD Rogers 3 ply parade snare shells (Blemeire or something like that) I picked up for under $100 (with hardware btw). I was toying with cutting them down and gluing the 2 halves together to make a 14 by 14 floor tom. Has anyone had any success doing such a thing? I would wrap the shell if and when they are cut and glued which I would hope would add to the stability.

Any thoughts,suggestions? Thanks

Structurally, I don't think a glue seam where two shells are joined would be particularly strong without reinforcement that would also deaden the shell's resonance. And if the shells aren't perfectly in round, it'll be a major pain to join them. And while you'll always find people who think it's a shame to cut into vintage drums, if they're Blaemire fiberglass shells, there are a few guys who might have to resist the urge to strangle you!

You could do it, with a homemade re-ring out of an AIT hoop. www.aitwood.com

Or use a piece of the cutout for the re-ring. Just cut it on the bias and slowly cut it down to size. I have a couple of 16 and 14 floor toms that have three re-rings.

About a year and a half ago, I bought an OLD Slingerland 10x14 marching drum shell with lugs only on eBay for $30. My intention was to get the lugs for another project. The seller was close by, so I just drove over to pick it up.

We rapped for about three hours about drumming, music and what not, and as I was leaving, he said "Oh, I forgot, this box of stuff goes with it."

It wasn't part of the auction, but the box had a couple of rims and a beat up badge along with a decrepit strainer system, and a couple of heads.

Well, the rims were COB, the badge went with the drum, and the butt end of the strainer was usable.

Still, my plan was to get the lugs off the shell and use them on something else.

I put the box and shell in my drum room, and went on eBay, and there was a BIN auction for the lugs I needed. I bought them, and used them for what I had bought the marching shell for.

I haven't considered altering a shell that didn't need to be altered since then.

A few weeks ago, I finished a restoration of the OLD shell with some help from my buddies here on the Forum.

It turned out pretty good, and she sounds GREAT !!!......:)

I think things worked out the way they were supposed to......

I don't know man, I just had my little Kharma moment there when those lugs I needed popped up on eBay and saved a good shell from my intentions. I just happened to hear a message for me that time.

I have done this many times over the years. This is how i do it,first cut the shells about 1/4" over that you need so your shells are 10x14 and you want to make a 14x14 cut the shells to 7 1/4",then mark the cut side with a piece of chalk around the shell, sand it down on a board with 40 git sand paper too all the chalk is gone that will make sure that the two halfs are flat, then get some good wood worker glue put in on each half of the shells, put the two halfs together put some tape on the out side of the shell, then used a clamp, that you can get from any hardwear store i can't recall the name--the clamp looks like a belt strip with a locking piece and tightin the clamp up,then take a piece of ply wood to fit over the top of the drum put like a very heavy pile of what ever and let it set up for 24 hrs..No need to put another ring inside of shell were you glued the shells together....Mikey
