The badge you're describing was in use from 1989 through 1994 and was one of the first badges used on Slingerland drums made overseas. If the drums were produced earlier in the '80s and were manufactured in the U.S., they'd have "Niles, Illinois U.S.A." on the badge.

They're not the most sought-after drums, but I've never had my hands on a Spirit kit to give you my own opinion. I've played a little on an imported Slingerland five- or six-ply kit from the '90s and while I wouldn't trade my 1950s Slingerland set for it, it wasn't bad.

As for what kind of badges you'd find on Slingerland drums from different times and places, check out DrCJW's badge articles and timelines HERE.
