1925 Slingerland Snare

Loading...

I have a 1925 Slingerland Eugene geisler Snare that I am looking to restore.

Does anybody know where I can find hexagonal lug nuts with fasteners from that time period and parts to complete a snare strainer assembly?

I'm gonna try to attach some pics.

Thanks,

Bill

This may be the fore-runner of a Slingerland snaredrum (if in fact its related to slingerland drums at all) that you have there, as Slingerland didn't start drum production until 1928, and they most certainly would have put the Slingerland name on it if it was a Slingerland product. Parts may be tough to find for that one.....

Slingerland did make a few "private label" drums, but they typically had the Slingerland name on them. If you check out DrCJW's badge page HERE, you can see a few of them.

What I find most interesting on that DrCJW page is the first Slingerland badge. I've attached it alongside a Eugene Geisler badge. Look similar? But as mentioned above, Slingerland didn't start making drums until a few years after 1925. (1927 according to Wikipedia, with the first Slingerland-branded kit available in 1928.) Is it possible your 1925 date is off by a few years?

Geisler as a company definitely pre-dates Slingerland. They apparently made drum heads, according to this page from a 1917 issue of the Music Trade Review.

I also found a few more pics of a Geisler snare drum on this page. The tensioning system sure looks like it was made by a banjo company. And in a case of "what's old is new again"... Ever see a Legato marching snare? (Legato was an Australian outfit that was bought out by Remo.) Their tensioning system was also inspired by banjos and I can see some similarities to the 1920's Slingerland design.

This is from page #18 out of rob cooks Slingerland book, As near as can be determined, this was the first type of drum sold under the Slingerland name, it was similar to the body of a banjo in it's tensioning system,a banjo key was used to adjust the tension rods, which threaded into banjo clips, which gripped the flanges cast into the shell. The drum was patented by Otto Geisler and appeared in the market place first with the Geisler badge, then the liberty musical Instrument company badge, and finally with the slingerland badge! patent date Dec 7 1928

So techically it is not a Slingerland drum as it predates Slingerland making drums, however it later became a Slingerland drum model. Am I close? Walking

Makes sense with the banjo tuning system as Slingerland was originally a banjo company.....

Ok,

I am aware of the fact that it pre-dates slingerland etc....

I am looking for anyone that could help me find parts for this drum.

Does anyone know a good place to look or somebody to contact>?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Steve told me to try out the forums because there a lot of people in here that might have some good info.

Thanks everyone for interest and knowledge,

- Bill
