Lyon @ Healy Marching Snare

Got started on this tonight.

Tillerva introduced me to the previous owner, thanks again for helping this happen!

A Lyon @ Healy 15 x 3.75 marching snare, probably from around the turn of the century or so. I had a smaller version of this drum with a birdseye maple veneer over mahogany last year, and foolishly sold it. So, I'm happy to have another in it's place now.

The shell is a thin sheet of brass, overlapped and riveted. I was going to just leave it as is, but when I looked through the vent hole and saw the nearly pristine interior, I disassembled her. I tried cleaning a small section of the exterior with a Cape Cod polishing cloth, and it slowly revealed an exterior finish nearly as pristine as the interior. I've got a long ways to go, the 3 inch section I cleaned so far took about 45 minutes... but I think it's going to be worth it. More pics tomorrow.

From tillerva

Nice man, glad it worked out! That's going to be beautiful.

Thanks, man. !!

Yesterday was just more of the same polishing... it's slow going..

I have the hardware soaking in WD40, and I cleaned one of the hoops yesterday also.

I'm pretty sure the hoops are not original, they are quite old, but seem a little "fresh' to be nearly 100 years old.....

I've found a few Lyon @ Healy catalogs/scans on eBay.... I'm hoping to be able to more closely date the drum by one of them.....

I'm thinking it is a New Departure model, but I'm not sure yet.....

Finally done.... other than removing the neglect from the shell, not a lot of "extra" stuff was done. Used some Scotts Liquid Gold on the hoops, and a little lemon wax. Cleaned the hardware with a vinegar bath, and lubed with 3-in-1 oil.

I put her back together, tuned it up and played her for a while.

I don't envy players from that era... reassembling this drum was a pain.

Getting both heads and hoops lined up, plus the gut snares that like to twist around on themselves at the same time sure was foreign to me.

Anyway, here she is....... The last pic is a "before" shot.....
