I've been obsessed with vintage drums since I started drumming at 14, and I was lucky enough to stumble across my 1950s Gretsch kit at 16. I'm 32 now, and the vintage collection keeps growing. There's a charm, a mystery, and a sense of tradition to vintage drums that I just don't feel when I see a drummer behind a new kit. I know it's not a nostalgia thing, because those drums were considered "vintage" years before I picked up my first pair of sticks.

But I know I'm not the youngest vintage player out there. That prize may go to my daughter:

That's her at 11 months. The Ludwigs will be hers someday if she wants them.

Now that is a great photograph Section2.

it's so special to have a photo like that to look back on years down the road.

Good one!

Thanks!

She really does seem to be a musical soul. She loves it when I drum on anything (chairs, countertops, whatever) and always plays along with me. Whenever she sees a drawing of a drum in one of her bedtime storybooks, she bangs away at it. And as of last week, whenever she hears "Barbara-Ann" come on the radio, she starts dancing and singing, "ba ba ba..."

If I'd known how much fun it would be to introduce a baby to the joys of making music, we'd have started having kids years ago. :)

Today I am 40 years, starting playing in age of 15.

Buying my first vintage set for 10 years ago, It was a Premier from early 70:s / late 60:s to have just as cheap practice kit.

I found them pretty soon sounding better then "modern" set thats cost 5 times more. And, of cours, more Nice and charming.

Athter I wille , I wanted to make them look better since they sounds so well. and I soon understaind thats its more funny to restore old drums, buy them cheap, is allmost same funny as playing "new" drumsets ( without souls).

So I bought me another cheap vintage set, then another, then another....

I do not use vintage drums of some nostalgic reason, I do not like att all much of 50, 60 or 70:s music ( except some Funk and Soul).

They are cheaper, sound as well as new drums OR better.

And have souls. All my sets are players set, never collectors.

From mcdrummer

I am glad to see young drummers experiencing the joys of vintage drums, if only because I have so many fond memories of those same drums."i depend on you older guys for your limitless amounts of wisdom!" We definitely have something that is limitless, but I'm not sure if it is wisdom!!!"does anyone else on here have a wife/gf whos also a drummer? " I think if my wife was a drummer, you'd read about us in the paper, something like "Wife dies in freak flying bass drum accident, Husband questioned about partial kit sold on ebay"I agree with you though, when I play jazz in particular I love to play vintage cymbals and drums, I often wonder who the original owner was of my drums and could it have been one of my Jazz idols? I feel like I'm "channelling something from that era into my music. Thanks for contributing MbbW, your opinions are as valid as anyone elses.

Thanks mcdrummer! I still cant believe that i contribute to a forum that hosts such heavy hitters. Though i guess in the end we're all just a bunch of people with similar interests on a certain few subjects and theres some kind of nerd inside all of us. lol

Oh yeah, oops, I forgot about keyboard players!

Why is it good to have a keyboard in the band? Gives the other guys some place to put their beers!
