my first snare build project

Loading...

hey peeps.

my very first snare drum build is finally gathering some momentum.

it all started with me window shopping on ebay, and seeing a 13" tom shell, no hardware, wrap - no nothing, and saying to myself that a 13 x 10" wooden shell snare would be different.

so to keep my wallet from shouting at me too much, i've cannibilised an old snare of mine, for the lugs, (it's only an old pearl export), and what i'm doing is, instead of trying to find twelve lugs(6 top, 6 bottom) i'm filling in the original lug screw holes, and putting the pearl lugs, which are double ended, in the middle of the shell, and am gonna use longer tuning rods.

i've got a friend who spray paints motorbikes, and helmets, all custom stuff, who is gonna try out some new paint and techniques out on my shell for me, all for free! he's trying out a silver undercoat, with a lovely purple over it, which will show the silver through it in certain light.

hopefully it will come together nice. i'm keeping a photo diary of my venture, so when it's all, i'll post it up to show you all.

speak soon

well, i've got everything i need to finish my snare.

hoops and tuning rods are in the post, skins are under my bed, lug boxes are on the shell, just need my main man to spray her, and we're good to go.

gonna put it together without the paint first, just to see if it sounds any good!!

i'm no technohead, as you can tell by the fact i only managed to get 1 frickin' pic on the forum for ya, but if i can do it, i'll post a video of it in action! (only if it sounds good though).

well excited!

by the way, my brother in law has made me a 14"x8" aluminium checker plate shell, i think it's about 3mm.

so thats gonna be my next little project.

any ideas/tips are more than welcome.

The outer wood grain of that shell looks like OAK -? possibly Ash -?

not too sure on that one lugs.

i'm pretty sure the shell came from a budget kit?

could be maple - but i'm no expert.

if it is oak or ash, all the better!

bonjour.

everythings arrived, and i've got her together and working.

it sounds lovely, really warm.

i've got to tune it properly yet (any tips?), the top head is giving off a long over-ring. have i just tuned it too high, or would a bit of damping do the trick.

heres some pics.
