I recently found a Maxitone kit at a local music store but it only has three pieces; a bass, snare, and mounted tom. It got me thinking that someone liked the floor tom and kept it and sold the rest to the store. Does any one know if Maxitone ever sold a three-piece kit?

Hi, Welcome! With these MIJ kits, we never know for sure as there is not a ton of info available. It was the norm for the 4 piece and 5 piece kits, and many of them even offered a 3 piece. However we know that the vast majority were sold as 4s. That said, MaxiTone is a later stencil, as my understanding is they are Pearl made, with the diamond lugs, and 9 ply mahog shells. As this is the norm for a 70s-80s Pearl stencil, they would really be no different than a Maxwin or Royce. MaxiTone may have come along n the 60s, however I am uncertain.If they are 3 ply with re-rings, that would place them in the pre-68 era, however I seriously doubt they were a stencil name at that time. Could you please post some pix of them? The interior, bearing edges, lugs and strainer will usually give us the best chance at getting you more info. We can give more info with pix, with the exception of whether or not it's original configuration. As for value....well, let's just say...they might really sound nice, but not worth much, as a 3 pc, only 50-75ish. Hope this helps.
