Old Ludwig Chicago factory....

Ok, its my night off from gigging this weekend....I was bored....so for the heck of it I googled 1728 N. Damen Ave Chicago, Ill.....the old Ludwig factory address......the building still stands there today! If you use google maps and the street view function you will see its there! Its been renovated into what looks like apartments or condos, residential anyway. If you have a copy of My life at the drums by Wm F Ludwig Sr, or the 1975 Ludwig catalog, there is a picture of the factory back in the day. You can clearly tell its the same building with renovations done to the facade'.

Here's a cool little tidbit....the second Ludwig & Ludwig factory, repurchased by Ludwig Industries in the early 1970's.....1611 N Lincoln St, Chicago

Tried googling it, but it doesn't seem to exsist anymore.....

Found out that Lincoln St was renamed Wood St. There is a Norht Wood street and it is not far from the old Damn Ave plant, which I remember reading somewhere was the case. However, no buildings look like the old Ludwig & Ludwig plant. I think it was on the corner where there is now a Fed-ex/Kincos and an auto repair shop....can anyone from chicago on the forum confirm this?

Cool !!

Is this the location that the Slingerland plant was very close to?

I wonder if there are any photographs with both plants in them.... were they close enough for that to be possible?

kev, they were a few blocks from each other! the old ludwig building is now condos! L-D is on the money!

I found the location of the L&L Building, using address info from this PDF. 1611 N. Lincoln is now 1611 N. Wolcott. Unfortunately, the building is no longer standing. There's new construction in progress on the site. CLICK HERE to see it.

...and HERE is the old Slingerland factory at Belden and Ward (now Wayne), where my own drums were made.

Cool! I was off a couple of blocks on the old L&L building I guess. (never been to chicago in my life, but I'm planning on it someday just to see where the old factories stood and maybe do the Blues Brothers tour of maxwell st. Visiting Motown in Detroit and Stax in Memphis are other planned visits in the future) I googled this stuff last night and found nothing like Rob's pdf file.....this is awesome.

Anyone know if they can be designated as historic landmarks. what is the criteria for that? Just wondering.

I don't think the old Ludwig or Slingerland factory sites would qualify for federally protected historical status since the buildings have already been significantly modified.

I think they are beyond historic landmarks now since they have been converted into condos, etc. I do believe that the Ludwig plant does have some kind of marker stating the historical value in the lobby or something....I breifly remember reading something like that in a real estate blurb while I was searching the other night.
