Pearl Kit... Info? What year?

Loading...

You`re correct on the Tiger`s Eye- started in 69 and ran for a few more years- this darker brown "tiger" seems more popular on these slightly later models. In this case- look at the tom mount- that one didn`t yet exist in 69. I do not have a 1970 catalog - only 66,68,69,72, (various pieces of cats from 73/74) and then 2 for 1975, 77, 79. The earliest this could be would be 1970- BUT they were not using that badge in 1970 yet- it began in 72 to the best of my knowledge. So the order of importance I am using to date these are like this (most important first to least).

1: tom mount style

2: badge design

3: bass drum spur design

4: wrap

5: lug design

6: drum sizes

7: associated stands

Hope I don`t sound snotty or tense- I just love dating this stuff. Here in Japan I spend hours a day dating the kits that roll through on auction. Comparing my dates to descriptions of them here in Japanese (helped alot by my wife!)

Here's a good example- here `s an unusal Pearl stencil kit under the name "Custom"- it's got the same tom holder as yours and the same lug design, yet it's set up for a single bass drum pipe and double tom holder branching up. That double tom holder was only found on the Thunderking models for a few years and was the first way Pearl mounted two toms on the bass drum. Yours goes to an actual 2-holed bracket on the bass drum which came in around 72/73 (to the best of my knowledge). This is not a Thunderking copy exactly because Thunderkings never had a cymbal arm bracket on the bass drum (because it was intended to hold two toms) This Custom kit has two toms and a cymbal arm bracket- so a hybrid. I see this kind of cross outfitting on some stencils- like they were using extra parts. Your kit has a cymbal bracket so it's not a Thunerking- that points it to being a deluxe IMO. I place this Custom stencil at around 72 as well. Here you see the longer bass drum legs that came on Pearl Thunderkings and then Challenger and Downbeat kits also in the 71-75 range. Those look to be after market FT legs.

I dont think you are sounding snotty at all! The help is very appreciated as i know very little about these drums. I actually just bought them initially as a lighter option to tour with and have since developed a keen interest in Earlier pearl drums...

Just as a quick note the stands did not come with the kit. I bought these all separately. Not that this means much! Any ideas on where to buy parts?

Not snotty at all Osaka. I certainly don't know as much about these as you guys. I'm certainly not much help with dating these. The observation on the lugs was just that, an observation. Every time I visit the forum I learn something new.Yes Sir

Oh and the floor is a 14"

These little 14's are sweet are they not? I have a Star 14 3 ply and it sounds like a cannon! I love it! They are disappearing as too many people are finding these old kits for cheap, stripping the floor tom and then selling off the others as kits, without a floor tom. They think it's OK to break up our stuff, but even the mere mention of doing so to an American vintage kit and the world comes to an end....

I really agree Jonni- 14x14 fts are the best. Actually, they can also make decent little bass drums if mic`d up well

The ft is the best i have owned. Definitely the best part of the kit in my opinion. The 12 sounds good but it think the ft really keeps up with american drums etc.

Dont really see too many of these types of kits AT ALL here in australia which is a real shame. I'd really love to find a Matching 22 or a 24 at some stage to have the option of a bigger kick.

Pearl never made a stencil 24" as far as I know. The first 24"s they made under the Pearl name I think were around 73/74. You can start to see 22"s in the outfits from about 69 onward- the 60s drums were very much mostly 20"s. I don`t even think 18"s- although available, were widely popular in the 60s(although it is my favorite size). I know you can find a 22" in the same year and make and wrap of this kit. If I see one on auction here I`ll PM you. Actually - there was one on Yahoo Auction Japan! not two months ago.

g'day radar.rohan

I just recently sold the same kit here in Melbourne, it was in the 22, 13, 16 sizes though. Mine had a single tom mount and a bass drum cymbal mount. Great sounding kits for the money i reckon. That finish is fairly comon, i've seen quite a few over the years. Your Powertone snare is beautiful and not so common around these parts. Drop by the Australian Collectors Group thread if you find the time.

Cheers.
