Masterwork CBS Hi Hats

Hey all,

I recently inherited these Masterwork CBS 14" hats. I haven't cleaned them yet as you see, but I'm looking for some info on them. I did a little research on them and the only info I can find is that the company started in 2002 and they are made in Istanbul. They are a pretty thin hat.

Anyone in the forum use this particular brand / series of cymbal? I know they are not vintage yet, but someday they will be. Are they a well sought after cymbal? Any opinion would be appreciated.

Cheers

Here ya go ...

http://www.masterwork.com.tr/

By the look of the Artist Roster, they're popular in Europe. I've seen only advertisements, I haven't found any shops that carry them.

I wouldn't be concerned about what they'll be worth years from now, especially since so many cymbal companies have arrived on the scene in the last 10 years. Everyone and his dog are making cymbals these days.

Do you like they way they sound? Do they work with what you're doing? If so keep em and enjoy!

I've played on several, they are very nice cymbals. Very similar to the other Turk brands ie: Bosphorus, Istanbul. Dark trashy/shimmery tones you'd expect from hand hammering, great for Jazz. I was told by a friend that Masterwork is making the majority of these Turk cymbals and the names Like TRX, Soultone etc are screenprinted by the company that is importing them. I don't how true this is or which companies they are, but I actually had a TRX crash that was engraved Masterwork under the Turkish stamp.

I started to clean up these hats and made a discovery. The words "Made in Canada" embossed on them. I thought these were Instanbul hats, but I was mistaken.

Anyone have anymore info about these? Sure would appreciate it.

Yeah - kudos to ronnybegnt for a good eye - even before your discovering the Canada embossment - one could see those are NOT the contemporary Masterwork cymbals made in Turkey (bear in mnd - it's Masterwork - not Masterworks - so if yours read Masterworks then they are of another provenance (BTW the newer Turkish ones are fabulous cymbals)

I apologize to and applaud ronnybengt for his keen eye. I don't know alot about these cymbals, I guess that's why I'm posting. I normally use Zildjian, Sabian & UFIP cymbals and hats.

Thanks Jaye for the info. These hats do say Masterworks. It was hard to clearly see the logo from all the tarnish.

I am curious now about Masterwork Instanbul cymbals. I haven't come across any dealers, or even any private sales for that fact in my area. Are they big sellers in North America, or are they more a "special order Item"?

Again, thanks all for the info!!

Cheers

Huh...odd...CymbalFusion.com used to be the US distributor and their prices and selection was darn good too....

....but I just visited the website and it looks absolutely NOTHING like what it looked like a year or so ago !!! Doesn't even look to be the same owner anymore.....too bad.

http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=masterwork+cymbal&_sacat=See-All-Categories

This seller has a bunch, but they all look to be the same two series. Masterwork makes about 6 or so series altogether...but maybe this eFlay seller has a line to all of 'em (?)

Isn't Masterworks (with the s) one of the trademarks CBS used for their records back in the vinyl LP days? I'm sure I had vinyl LPs which were "CBS Masterworks". And yes, Masterwork cymbals from Turkey are nice. No relation to CBS.
