What's your favortie vintage drum company?

Loading...

Seeing how some people think this forum is "all about the money" lets change it up a bit.

lets talk drums.

which company is your favorite? and why?

For me it's Ludwig (hence my name)

they have been around the longest and i just can't get enough of them.

new, vintage, i love it all.

i had an early 40's WFL kit.

i had a 60's downbeat.

i currently have a 1957 WFL w/Superclassic

and a 2001 5-piece USA classic maple.

for me it will always be Ludwig.

what about you?

For the longest time I was a Gretsch man, but in the last couple of years I've fully converted to a Slingy guy. I find them to have the warmest sound with just amazing tone. When it comes to snares, I just don't think anything can beat a single ply maple shell. They are valued less than some of the other companies, but that just means I get em for cheaper :D!

I'm currently playing on a mid 60s red sparkle Slingy 13/16/20 with matching single ply artist snare.

Ludwig.

I like the art deco styling of the keystone badge drums. I like the lightweight shells. I like the way the company used to reflect the style of the times by the style of their drums. The B/O badge style almost perfectly encapsulates the look of the 70's.

I like the fat way that Ludwigs feel when you dig into them. I like the Speedking pedal. I like the Acrolite. I like the Supra. I like the Atlas hi-hat pedal. I like the baseball bat mufflers. Can't forget the greatest of all throwoffs ever made -the P-83! The list goes on and on.

I used to stare at the catalogs and daydream about the Octa-Plus set.

They did crazy things. Vistalites....mod orange...citrus mod...psychedelic red. They named a color to fit into the LSD tripping kids of the day!

Yes, Rogers drums were higher quality. Yes, Gretsch drums were more expensive. Yes, Slingerlands were right next door. But Ludwig had the magical stuff, in my opinion.

They are my favorites, by far.

I'm a Ludwig guy myself, but I do fancy a Gretsch 3-ply Round Badge! Oh, and I dig Slingerlands, too!

And Rogers, too!

I like the Ludwig hardware. Very stylish. I like the Rogers hardware and shells. Excellent drums. Gretsch makes some nice floors. Very good drums.

But, for me it's Slingerland. I'm a drummer and not a collector. I play these things and sound comes WAY before any other factor. To my ears, Slingerland made the deepest and warmest and most resonant drums of the big four. They epitomize the Vintage Sound.
