Pearl Kit... Info? What year?

Loading...

So im new here and I just got these Pearl and dont really know anything about them... They are pretty clean and sound great! From what I can gather they are ealy 70's maybe? All seems pretty original except for the dampener pads being removed on all drums and maybe not the original tom holder?

The snare is a Rogers powertone I already had which sounds great. No idea how old! The Ride is an 'A' dark i think. Its incredibly thin and sounds amazing!!

Any info on either would be very much appreciated

This is a lovely specimen! I strongly suspect you have a 1972 Pearl Deluxe-

Here is a 72 catalog shot. Just lovely.

Very nice! As for the missing pads on the mufflers, I use cymbal felts and rubber cement to replace them. Just crank it up so the pad is in contact with the head for about an hour and it should stay put. You may need to cut it down to fit the size and thickness desired, but it is an effective fix.

Thanks guys! It definitely looks a lot like that kit! The lugs look the same as far as i can see... Just a slightly different tom mount to the one pictured in the photo i think! Also mine is a 20" Kick not 22 but i assume you could get either? It also has the matching wooden snare.

As for the mufflers... The whole mechanism has been removed from the shells, just leaving the two little holes. Any ideas where i could pick some up? The floor tom on this thing sounds incredible but just goes forever!

Well, I am certainly no expert, but I could swear, radar, that the lugs on your pearl kit are similar to the lugs on my Silvertones. The ones on the catalog kit, look more like the coffin style.Hmmmm

You could be right. The sizes and wooden snare may also be a give away. Strange though if thats the case...

Ok gents- the beauty of a free country is you can think what you will- go ahead and believe what you want- But for me- you gotta look at all the parts together along with the wrap and put it all together. First thing to know is Pearl used different badges on the same drums in the same year- it`s a mystery as to why. Even the lugs in the early 70s were a little varied- sometimes you see middle level luan drums with Pearl`s best diamond shaped lugs. Right around 72 they began to go to the rectangular lug that is the Rogers copy (lasted into the 1980s) So, lower end drums got the battleship lugs even in the 75 catalog while the higher end got the rectangular models. Valencias had the old style double lugs up until almost 1980.

The tom holder is the give away- it`s only Pearl and it`s set for a 5-piece kit- so can`t be anything but a Deluxe, a Downbeat or a Thunderking. The bass drum doesn`t have 10 lugs- so it`s not in the highest catagory- SuperDeluxe.

Pearl started with that particular tom holder in 1971 and it held until 1976 on

middle and lowerl level models. The wrap is basically a "psychedelic" and was phased out by 74/75 completely- by 75 all you could get in old style wraps was BMP and WMP, all the rest was solids and satins. Its a Deluxe somewhere between 71-73 so I said 72 - the lightweight bass drumlegs give it an earlier date - they got longer in 74 for this model. These are my thoughtsCoffee Break2

I kinda thought that the wrap looked like Tiger Eye going on the Catalogs from earlier years, having said that I haven't seen one from 72ish so who am I to disagree!! Thanks heaps for the info!
