Adhesive for rewrapping question.

Loading...

I am getting ready to rewrap my MDF premier shells. I have the wrap comming form Drum maker. At my shop we buy Weldwood flamable contact adhesive in 5 gallon pails. We use a binks 2 gallon paint pot with a Binks 2000 gun to spray the glue. We glue lots of fabric, vinyl etc to foam and we use it to install / replace vinyl tops. I have used this glue for years on countless different things. This is the adhesive cabinet makes use on formica installations. Precision voids thier results guarantee if any adhesive besides the 3M waterbased adhesive is used. Has anyone ever used anything else besides the 3M for wraping? If so how did it turn out?

Thanks guys,

Poppy

I've used the Weldwood adhesive in the past. Short term results are good, but longterm, not so good. The adhesive dries out over time and eventually it will give way. Also, cleanup is a bear. The last kit I did with Weldwood had to be redone about a year ago.....lasted about 7 years before any problems popped up. I've been using the 3M water-based for about 6 years now and have had much better results. Easier cleanup, better for the environment, and it seems to be holding up better than other methods. BTW, I've done the tape method twice and both had to be redone within about a year of doing it, so I am NOT a fan of the tape method for long term use.

I used to use the water-based glue and it worked really well, just as good as the flammable. I haven't done much laminate work the past few years so I can,t remember the brand. I am sure if you contact a laminate supplier in your area that they can supply you with a good water-based glue. From what I remember it was a blueish green in color and that was how it was known to be the good stuff.

Did you use the water based weldwood or the flamable?

I tried the waterbased weldwood on my 66 luddy marching snare and it didnt stick worth crap. I ended doing the killer hybond tape method. I guess I should just go ahead and order the 3m aand be done with it. I dont wanna do all this work and spend the money and wonder if its going to work.

I'm wondering why precison insists on the water based adhesive. The solvent based should be stronger I would think. Is it a envrimental issue, or maybe because of the fumes? The glue we use will stick a vinyl top on and last for decades. We also stretch the vinyl tremendously around the back quarters of the car and the adhesive will not let go.

Because it was damaging the wrap, and the manufacture won't honor the warranty unless you use what they recommend!!

The green stuff is the 3M stuff......they make it in "natual" too....
