Latest Resto Project/Purchase

Loading...

Well, I thought I'd post a couple of before pics of my latest purchase/resto project. Its probably the oldest drum I've had in my collection yet and should be an easy resto. Its a Ludwig & Ludwig 12x15 marching snare that dates from somewhere between 1918 and 1929. Not 100% sure of the date yet as I'm waiting for it to arrive and will check for dates when I start the resto. Its a model #216 Center support thum-rod tension model drum from what I've been able to figure out. At the time of writing this, someone has fitted a rope tension system to the drum in addition to the rod tension. Something tells me it was for looks more than anything else. Also, someone has fitted a later throw-off to it. Judging by the extra hole above it, it looks like its the wrong strainer, but doesn't look like any extra holes were drilled to fit it. I may have to purchase new wood hoops for it, the paint will be stripped and at that point I'll be able to tell if its mahogany or maple. Either way, it will be refinished to a "natural" finish. So, I'm on the lookout for the correct strainer, after which, I'm planning on fitting calf heads and gut snares. I really don't have much use for a marching snare (although I do miss the Leedy & Ludwig one I restored last year) but I'd like to have it just because of the age and "coolness" factor.

Pictures to follow......oh, and I'm including a catalog scan close up of the drum so that it IDs the correct strainer I'm looking for. If anybody has one please PM me. Maybe we can do a trade for the one fitted to the drum?

A few more.....

BTW...I'm figuring the approximate date of the drum by the hole spacing for the original strainer...by 1930 when L&L was owned by Conn, they went to the Leedy-type strainer.....more modern and much different hole spacing. Think the looks of a P-83, without the throw-off function.

The type I'm looking for is what's featured in the catalog scans pics.....

Also, since this is a little before my realm of expertise with Ludwig, does anyone know if the butt end would be correct and original to this type of drum? Or would there be a leather snare "butt"? The other thing I'm questioning is the originality of the tone control......first, why would you need one on a marching drum, and second, it sure looks conn-era Leedy (although conn era L&L was similar too) to me....

If you want to use silk wire-wound snares instead of the optional gut, I have some I could contribute to the restoration.

Just let me know, and I'll send them along.

Hey,L-D,On your snare yes the strainer would be the one you posted in the catalog page's..The strainer was holded on the drum with two "Lug's" like you see on the middle of the drum...The strainer was a long T-rod with a rounded top that would go into the two lug's the bottom part that would hold the snare wire's would screw up and down the T-rod..I think i have these parts for you i would have to check...As far as the butt plate to me someone added that to the drum that drum should have a leather butt..As far as i know the muffler was added to the drum too Ludwig snare's like that had No muffler...Mikey P.S. glad to have you Back!!!!!

Mikey, thats what I was thinking about the butt and muffler. Those will probably be going in the parts bin along with the throwoff. If you do find the strainer parts please send me a PM. The gut snares and leather butt I figure I could get through Cooperman, heads through Rebeats. This should be a fun and easy resto...Excited

Hey L-D,

I wondered about why a marching snare would need an internal dampner as well. I have Slingerland I am working on from 1930's or 40's (Cloud Badge era, I don't have it sitting in front of me), and it has one as well.

I know what you mean about the coolness factor of something that old, even though it probably isn't worth a ton. But, I think that's what this forum is all about!
