Gretsch Rb Kit Questions

Loading...

Two easy ones (hopefully) for you Gretsch "experts" --

1. Did Gretsch issue brown painted wooden bass drum hoops on any of their 60s RB kits in lieu of the traditional black?; and

2. In today's vintage drum market, what would be considered a fair market price for an all original Gretsch RB player's kit (20/13/16) in original sparkle wrap with no modifications and/or extra holes in any of the shells and two vintage Avedis Zildjian cymbals (20 & 18)?

THANKS in advance for your help!

Unfortunately I don't have any pics. I used the phrase "player's kit" mainly because the hardware, although 100% original, is in somewhat rough condition, including some surface rust. The kit needs a thorough cleaning and polishing. However, there is no tom rash to speak of nor any issues with the wrap as far as fading, rips or tears.

It sounds to me that if you give your kit a little elbow grease, you may have something more than a players kit my friend. Worn down lugs and hardware can be polished or replaced - a worn down original wrap cannot. The RB market is on it's head right now. It's a crap shoot. The "going price" of a kit like that depends on who wants it and how much they're willing to spend on a given day to get it. It's really changing on a daily basis. If your kit has no issues with the wrap - no fading, seams tight, minor scratches and scuffs - you can realistically expect $1500-2K depending on how eager you are to sell. If you don't mind sitting on them for a while, the right buyer will come along sooner or later. That price could change depending on what "sparkle wrap" it is. If it's a rare one - burgundy, tangerine, starlight, green - the value can go up drastically.

Btw, brown hoops were not an option on RB kits. If it was a custom request, you've got the only factory brown hoops I know of. :)

I hope this helps.

vintagemore2000/GretschGuy/kevins:

Thanks so much for the feedback. I do apreciate it!Bowing

I got a chance to take a closer look at the kit. The wrap (champagne sparkle) is in really nice shape, with minimal to no fade, no significant scratches or scrapes that I could see (with my one good eye!) and no tears. However, it is lifting evenly on each drum at the seams.

As originally stated, no modifications have been made to any of the drums nor are there any extra holes in any of the shells. Other than the lifting wrap, the other cosmetic issues that I noticed were:

1. Chrome flaking off of the diamond tom mount;

2. Significant scratching & scuffs on the die cast hoops on the toms;

3. Rust on the floor tom legs;

4. Dark brown painted (?) bass drum hoops; and

5. An extremely small piece of the champagne sparkle in-lay is missing on one of the hoops.

Configuration is 20/13/16 and included are two Avedis Zildjian cymbals (20 & 18) and two cymbal stands. The bass drum has the original Gretsch logo head on the resonant side. There's a possibility that I could get this kit, including the two cymbals & stands, for under $1,000.

However, I'm not in the position to spend significantly more to address the aforementioned cosmetic issues. Do you believe that these issues could be handled by an amateur like myself? Also, thinking "down the road", do you think that a Gretsch kit in this configuration and wrap would bring a decent amount of interest as far as resale value goes?

I happen to own a Gretsch Name Band snare in the identical wrap and thus the interest in this particular kit.

THANKS in advance for any and all input!

20,13, 16 kits, although a standard configuration in the '60s, are a very tough sell.

Still, round badge Gretsch are always sellable, and in original condition, like the set you describe, you could make a profit on the set if you pay $1000 or less.

The cleanup would be relatively simple and just require some time and elbow grease.

I am in total agreement with the rest of the post, all are very easy fixes, and with a good hardware cleaning, you may find them to be quite nice also,

I also looked at this kit yesterday and the day before.

Believe me all of you, it is in very rough condition.

you cannot polish away scratches on all of the lugs and

deep gouges in the rims. I also took a very close look at

wrap and there is various areas that are spoiled and I don't

think its going to rub out. Other than that they appear to

be in good shape shell wise. also I was having second thoughts

about the wrap. i thought it looked quite dark overall.

These drums were just plain ugly.

I did not buy them because I know I will want them to look

better and to buy rims and lugs all the way around and maybe

other hardware pieces will cost around 400 to 500 dollars at

least. so this puts your investment at 1500. it does not have

a round badge snare so i can't ever see getting more than that

at this time. I did not think it was a bargain of any particular kind.
