Vintage Gracy Drums

Loading...

Hello All! I was hoping someone out there can help me. I recently picked up an OLD set of drums by Gracy. I believe they are from the 50's or 60's. Red sparkly wrap, very dated hardware, but it is in great condition. There is a 22" bass, 16" floor tom, 13 " mounted tom, and a 14" wood snare with stand. The bass has legs, as does the floor tom. The original bracket holding the 13" to the bass is there too. I have searched, but have not found much. The badges say "GRACY Drum Mfg. Co. Ltd.,". Any ideas? I would like to know how much it's worth if I was to sell it. Thanks!! toolnut32@aol.com

Welcome! First of all, those are nice looking drums. Second, I think the shells are the later, thicker shells. They appear to be a 6 or 9 ply mahogany. Could you take a couple of pictures of the interiors please? Also, the lugs and strainer will tell us a couple of other important factors, such as the era and the maker. These drums are "stencils" in other words, they are copies of era appropriate American drums, and were usually produced by Star (later to become TAMA) or Pearl. If you could post those, we can get you in the neighborhood. I can tell you this-if they are the thicker lauan shells, they are not likely worth more than a couple hundred.

Sorry, didn't see the snare shell. It looks like the 3 ply shells I have, and the others, from what I can see, are the heavier shells, the lug design is a copy of the Gretsch lugs. This may be one of the obscure builders that are hard to pin down, exactly. If they are, it will be just whatever the market will bear, and right now, the market is soft on MIJ drums. To me, and this is MY OPINION, the thinner, 3 ply shells are of more value because of the deep, sonic resononce they produce. The heavier shells are higher pitched, and ringy, and are hard to tune up. My 3 ply shells tune up nicely, if you know what you are doing, but to get these you might need to work over the edges. The snare likely has a deep, woody tone, and many paople don't like it, as they are, again, hard to tune and get the ring out without rounding, or sharpening the edges. Also, a good sanding and lacquering of the interior usually gets them to sound better.

The color is Red Marine Pearl.
