Zildjian 50's or 70's stamp?

Loading...

Hi all

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a hollow stamp from the 50's and the 70's? Will the 70's cymbal be significantly different in weight or lathing from the 50's cymbal in some way?

Thanks

David

Are you talking about the stamp or the painted logo...as far as I know the metal stamp was only used in the 50's. There might of been hollow logos that were typical of the 50's and 70's, but not a stamp.

I mean the stamp. I have read that zildjian brought back the hollow stamp for a time in the 70s, but I haven't seen examples and I don't know how to tell the difference in lathing or hammering between time periods.

Thanks

Drumaholic would have the answer, but I believe the only hollow stamp was made in the 50"s.

It was called the Big Stamp, here's a sample

That's correct. The hollow stamp was used only in the 1950's.

There is a stamp from the mid 1960's where the thickness of the letters in "Zildjian" almost appear hollow, but in fact thyey are really solid. And that one is a little larger that the earlier 1960's types. That's the only other trademark that I have ever seen confused with the true hollow large stamp.

Is it the 50's "trans" stamp, without the 3 dots, that was repeated in the 70's, then? Or were there no repeats, and the folks who have written about this simply wrong?

From vintagecymbalguide.com: "The Mid 1950's stamp is also duplicated in the 70's, but the stamp is not as heavy and the cymbal is not hand hammered so do not be confused by that stamp." Then the site shows a picture of a "mid-50's" stamp that has the hollow lettering. I think it's just confusedly presented on this website, and elsewhere.

Thanks for all the input

vintagecymbalguide.com has pitifully minimal info.

Here are a number of my own cymbal stamp pics and what I believe to be their dates 50's vs 70's here.
