1960s English Rogers, off size floor tom - 15.5". Where can I get a head?

Loading...

Hi guys,

I recently acquired a 1960's English Rogers kit which came with some pretty beat up skins on. I got around to changing them the other day, held a tape measure across the rims and got the sizes at : 12", 14" snare, 16" floor, 20" bass. Standard.

However when I got the 16" Floor skin home, I found that it wouldn't fit in the rim. It wasn't much out, but enough to mean there is no way it is going in.

The skin was an Evans G2 coated.

The skin which came off the drum was an old Remo Weatherking, and the only difference I can see between the two is that the Remo has a plastic rim which is fairly thin and tight to the edges of the skin, where the new Evans has a much thicker metal hoop, presumably modernisation.

I have heard that some companies, such as Premier did used to make 15.5" floor toms, and I fear that may be what I have here...

Has anyone experienced this / have any advice where I can get a skin / what to do?

Thanks in advance

Adam

Possibly pre-international (metric) sizes, a la Premier before the mid 1960s? Remo offers pre-international Coated Ambassadors and Pinstripes in a few sizes (10, 12, 16, & 20), which you should be able to order through any Remo dealer. If it's not one of the below heads and sizes, though, they would have to custom make the head to order:

BA-0110-PR- AMBASSADOR®, Coated, 10" Diameter,9-5/8" Actual Dia.

BA-0112-PR- AMBASSADOR®, Coated, 12" Diameter, 11-7/8" Actual Dia.

BA-0116-PR- AMBASSADOR®, Coated, 16" Diameter, 16-5/16" Actual Dia.

BR-1120-PR- AMBASSADOR®, Coated, 20" Diameter, 19-5/8" Actual Dia.

PS-0310-PR- PINSTRIPE®, Clear, 10" Diameter, 9-5/8" Actual Diameter

PS-0312-PR- PINSTRIPE®, Clear, 12" Diameter, 11-7/8" Actual Diameter

PS-0316-PR- PINSTRIPE®, Clear, 16" Diameter,16-5/8" Actual Diameter

PS-1320-PR- PINSTRIPE®, Clear, 20" Diameter,19-5/8" Actual Diameter

Have you measured the diameter of the shell?

I have had plenty of English Rogers past and present and never had your problem. Is the rim original? Should be a tall rim and the English ones are quite heavy. If it is original then I would suspect it has something to do with the head.

I headed up an ER 16 the other day with a pin stipe on the batter and Remo coated Amb. on the reso. - no problems.

One of mine is an ER Mardi Gras from 1961, it is older than yours and I have no problems with that.

It is the original rim, matches all others, nice and tall and really weighty. I haven't measured the shell as I've now moved back to Uni in Durham so it will be a while until I am back, might ring my dad and ask him to measure shells.

Could well be that evans skins are simply just too big, in which case I'll try a REMO coated.

Cheers for the reply

My experience is exactly the opposite. I've got a problem with a 10" Yamaha drum that has an ever-so-slightly oversized rim. Remo heads seat just fine on this drum, but the flesh hoop on Evans heads is juuuuuust a little bit smaller and will eventually slip out from under the rim.

(No knock against either head company in this case. It's very definitely a Yamaha problem.)

Here's an idea, if the fit is not far off, why not warm up the hoop on top of a boiler or in hot water and see if it expands enough to take the head.

It does sound like a pre-international. However, if the problem is that your new head is too small, you can fit gaskets under each lug, in effect widening the diameter of the drum just enough.
