Broken Spur-Lok

OK, What do you do when this happens?

Can this plastic piece be replaced? (Seems like a bad place for plastic if you ask me. But Ludwig didn't.)

The pins the piece mounts on are staked in, so the only way I see to remove them is to drill them out, thus ruining them. I guess they can be replaced with an appropriate sized machine screw and nut.

Or, is it just not worth the trouble?

Bought that HH new in 1965, so I'm just a little reluctant to say goodbye to an old friend.

I have another identical Spur-Lok (that one has a black plastic piece) so it's not that I'm now without a HH.

I think the ONLY appropriate place for plastic on a drum kit is the part we pound on with hard wood sticks....Ironic, ain't it?...lol

I don't see the old 112x hi-hats in Ludwig's recent parts catalogs, so it's possible they don't stock that part anymore.

Mikey777 might have it, though, if it's the same part they were talking about in this thread a couple of months ago.

If all else fails, it doesn't like like it would be too hard to improvise a replacement linkage.

Yep, I've got one with the same problem.

Hmmm, Had a chance to sleep on it and take a second to think "out of the box".

Maybe the quick and easy solution is to use a small adjustable hose clamp. That could be threaded around the existing pins and tightend.

Should work as far as I can tell....And, no more plastic.

Yep, good call. There is also this 'metal strap' stuff you can get that would work.

How about making one out of leather like the old Slingys?

Funny you mention that Pops.

The HH that came with my used WFL Classics when I got them in 1964-65 had a leather pull on the HH stand. I really can't recall if it was a Slingy though. At any rate, that leather strap broke, and was the reason I bought the Ludwig Spur-Lok in the first place.

The links do show up on ebay from time to time. Also, they made them in metal as well as the white and later black plastics. Sometimes you can score a really sad looking hi-hat (be it complete or partial) for cheap on ebay as well. Any of the following will work for you if you come across a "parts" stand: the classic hihat (which is lighter duty than the one you have, think Ringo), the Atlas (which is what you have), the Hercules, the Atlas II, and the Modular hihat up to about 1985, after that they went to an import design which isn't the same. Any of those stands all used the same link and footboard......I would think you should be able to find a parts stand for reasonable money to repair yours. :D

I'd think it wouldn't be hard to make that link out of aluminum or the leather strap-just break off the rest of the plastic link and loop it through. As for the rivet-I've taken a common nail the right diameter, cut it to the right length plus a quarter inch, split it that 1/4" with a dremel wheel and used it as the rivet,by spreading the end open.Necessity, you know....

Is the metal link from the Speed King bass pedal the same part or at least compatible? Seems like it might make sense since the older 1121 hi-hat stand has the same footboard as the Speed King bass pedal. Since Ludwig still sells the Speed King bass pedal, the linkage (#P1210A) is available from Ludwig dealers for about five or six bucks.
