FINISHED RESTORE - 6 LUG Gretsch Dixieland Snare

I'm satisfied with the finish although not exactly like I wanted it.

I'm calling it Maple Syrup Glaze.........

The drum came to me with no hoops and only part of the strainer and 1/2 or the sparkle finish as you can see.

The wood was good enough for a natural finish so I went with that - but I have some Gold Sparkle wrap coming from PrecissionDrum just in case.

It sounds good and I'm playing it with my 58 Gretsch kit for now. It's got a nice ring - almost like a metal drum. I'm wondering if that's got something to do with the Poly reflective coat I put over the silver sealer.

Gretsch snare drums have a tendancy to be on the dry side,so im certain that poly you added to the interior is giving you that "nice ring"Cool1

First I did 4 coats tung oil + 3 coats Poly. But it wasn't dark enough for my liking........so I took it down to bare wood .....again.

I used some stain and a little tung oil.......don't ask me why, but it worked. I put 3 coats Varathane Poly clear gloss over that........then some Mother's Car Wax and buffed it out. It still wasn't shiny enough for me but I liked the finish so I quit while I was ahead. If I wanted a real glossy finish I probably would have to go with a Phenolic resin Varnish or something. Or get into the wet sanding arena.

Yes - I have a Gretsch Renown PWAM snare that has one of those Poly multi wet-sanded finishes on it. That's a little out of my league right now.......maybe in the future though.

This drum does have a nice ring to it....

That drum really came out nice-I owned a green/silver duco for a while, same set-up but hook rims.Never really found a use for it.Very nice work on your drum, and well worth the effort.
