Late 50's Slingy Radio King Restore

Loading...

Alright guys. Here's the dirt on this one. Sorry for the horrible pics, but the drum is not in my possession as of right now. These are iPhone pics from my buddy who picked up the drum...just to give me a basic idea of what I am working with.

Looks like a mid-late 50's Radio King. Obviously BDP. Needs the arm for the clamshell or "super" strainer (no surprise). I see there are repros made for relatively cheap.

Also, looks like someone took off the adjustable butt end of the clamshell and replaced it with an early Zoomatic...which resulted in 3 extra holes. Lame But atleast they replaced it with actual Slingerland parts!

I am pretty sure I could fill the holes, punch out some bdp from some sample sheets to cover them, and then I would just need the original butt and some Puresound wires....and that pesky bottom hoop.

Does anyone know if these Super Clamshell Adjustable Butt ends are impossible to find? Seems like they are based on my preliminary search of the net. None on flea-bay etc.

Let me know what y'all think and if I am incorrect on any of my deductions of the era of the drum. I am getting a pretty nice Slingy collection going here!

Thanks!

Clamshells are a PAIN IN THE ARSE to find!! Sometimes you see them and then you wait 2 or more months for another to come around. Check with Mikey or VADrums, they would be your best/fastest way to find one.

I missed an auction about a month ago for 3 clamshells, not three sets but mixed individual and I bid 100 on those and didn't win, and they were not in good shape.

Killer drum BTW!!! bottom hoops do show up pretty often. I love streamline/cigar lugs.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

Figures.

Thanks for the kind words. I am excited to get it up and running. I will definitely drop Mikey a line. I will stay away from VADRUMS though thank you very much.

Nevermind? Does that mean they are not worth $90?

Just a little confused!

Thanks,

I was about to suggest selling the Zoomy to offset some of the cost of your repairs, but they are so hard to find in good shape it might be best to hang on to it in case you need it.

There are a lot of them out there without the adjustment knob, and the only reliable repair is $100 from Jim Petty.

Man.

So it sounds like I am in some what of a pickle as they say.

I am feeling like hanging on to the Zoomy is a good idea. You never know what I might come across..and it looks to be in pretty nice shape....but I guess if the opportunity came to trade I would have to do it.

What a bummer that there are no "Super Butt Ends" around...and if there are they are gonna be ridiculously expensive. What to do?

Any other ideas?

Adam the damage is already done to the shell with the extra holes, is it not playable the way it is??

I mean...not really...and I really want to put it back to original. Fill the holes etc.

The Clamshell has the screw for the elongated snare wires, and the butt side has the zoomy two hole eyelets for string kind of deal. Not really sure how I would mount the snares with this set up.

Any ideas?
