Boy Howdy!

I haven't seen one of these for a LONG time. A Ludwig Slotted Coliseum Snare! Excited Just curious about the value$, collectibility, etc. i've never seen a product review on one of these, so PLEASE! If you have an opinion, good link, or a review by Ned Ingberman send it here to me. Here's the eBay link...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380210792956&ssPageName=ADME:B:BCA:US:1123 How much did these retail for? Knowing Ludwig a LOT!

Currently working on a 7 piece virgin double bass 3 ply early 70's Ludwig kit to be wearing....MOD ORANGE.

I see them periodically on Ebay. The slotted ones are less common than the full shelled ones, of course.

I myself own the big brother to the Coliseum. Ludwig called it the "Deep Rock Snare" (late 80s-early 90s era). It's a 10x14" 6-ply with 12 lugs, and a dedicated drum set snare, not a converted marching snare. Got mine off ebay about 2 years ago for $100. :D

So is that what the coliseum really is? A leftover marching drum.? Hmmmm I have a vague recollection of these being featured in the catalog as marching equipment. that would probably explain the lug locks;super high tensioning.

Not exactly. The Coliseum is a 14x8 snare. Marching snares start with a depth of 10". The Coliseum did boast a high-tension-friendly 12 lugs, but was available with either a standard P-85 strainer or the P-87 you'd find on a marching snare.

I own a 78/79 Coliseum Snare drum 8" x 14" that is in mint condition. I bought it about 6 months ago. It came with an old padded Sonor Hard case. The inside of the shell boasts the signature of the late William F. Ludwig II in 1996. This snare has quite the snap to it.

I was told that they made these snares mainly for orchestra so that the people sitting in the nosebleed section could here it's sound. I truly believe this.. It is a very loud snare.

Cheers

I have a Coliseum that I use in my hair metal cover band, seems appropriate! I figured it was made for heavy metal, but the orchestra idea sounds reasonable too.

Errmm...people in an orchestral audience don't have any trouble hearing a snare drum. The Coliseum was made for big loud rock venues. Hence its name.
