My Painted Luddy Tom Project

Loading...

Well I pretty much have mine done, still looking for a couple of parts but I think in general it's going to look really good.

This one had been painted black then someone wet sanded about a 1/4 of the paint off which left the wrap a little dull. It also had some overspray and splatter on the inside and on the hardware. I used a stripper to remove the paint and a 3m product and an orbital sander with a wool bonnet to polish the finish back to a really nice shine and then waxed it.

Ok...now for some tricks...Wanna get crud off of your hardware easily, use EagleOne wheel cleaner with a sponge or electric tooth brush. Eagle one makes a few wheel cleaners, use the Mag wheel cleaner for general parts and the Chrome wheel cleaner for chrome parts. I then use turtle wax chrome polish/rust remover for the final go, if you have any residue on the hardware use clear amonia to really make it shine!

I would rather not say for fear that someone will mess up their finish with a product that I use/used.

Yep, I understand

A tricky road, that one.... I know I'm not ready to go there yet !

wow, really good job.i had to take off black paint from a 50's ludwig floor tom once.it had white marine pearl under it.i should of kept that drum.but i used acitone to get it off (and before anyone replies with "wtf"...,it was a last result and don't recomend anyone doing the same unless you have to)

i had to be real easy using it,but it all came off and i buffed out the wrap on a buffing machine made to buff chrome in a industrial shop.and it looked like new!

I used 3M's safest stripper to remove black paint off of my WMP floor tom. It worked very well too. I experimented on how long to leave the stripper on. I think I ended up with 10 minutes and it came right off. I cleaned up the last bit with laquer thinner then had my body shop friend polish it with 3M's plastic headlight polish. It turned out way way better than I ever hoped for.

I used a plastic scraper.
