Early 1960's Stewart

Typically, these go in the 250 range, for a 100% complete kit, but with that wrap, maynbe a tad more. By complete, it means all the hardware. Others may tell you no, they are worth 750, but hey, let's be real, they are MIJ, and if they are worth more than that, we would not be able to collect them, now would we? If they are in need of work, they usually go for less than 100, closer to 50-75. The reasons are many, but the big one is because they are more a curiosity than collectible. And the 6 ply shells are hard to work to a good sound. I don't know why the Japanese decided to go with the thicker shells, but in my opinion, they made a big mistake.

And yes, 1100 is laughable, even if they do have a super rare wrap. In perfect condition, with all hardware and cymbals, 500 USD is top dollar for an MIJ kit.

Again, thanks for the info. When I bought these drums, the fellow thought that they were circa 1963. The Apollo kit you described sounds like a fantastic looking kit. I recently saw a 5 piece Coronet with original snare for sale and the person was asking $1100.00 CDN for them. They had a psychedelic wrap on them, looked to be in great shape but I thought that they were asking too much for them. In your opinion, cn679, what would you consider market value for these Stewart drums? Cheers

Jonnistix,

The shells to me look like 3 ply. They are about 1/4" thick. Hope this helps you. I attached a pic looking at the resonant side of the snare.

Cheers

These are 5 ply. Not a lot of these around. They could be 6, but I think they are the 5 ply shells. 3 ply shells are extremely thin, and have re-ring in them.

The one on the left is a 3 ply, the right is 5 or 6 ply.

I saw that kit as well. It looks like the same person who advertised the Supreme drums that I posted about. I don't see the ads any more for either kits, so maybe they both sold. I would hope to see anyone make a profit, especially if they put a lot of time and effort into a possible complete resto. However, if these kits keep selling for this, I soon won't be able to afford them.:(

I think John is about right, depending on the condition of the drums, they're worth about $250 or about $300-350 if they are in nearly perfect condition.

However, with these drums, no matter what the condition, they are worth what someone will pay for them, or, what someone is willing to sell them for. Often times these drums are found in poor, or neglected condition as they may have been sitting in someone's basement or garage for years and years, or have gone through many teenage owners that weren't so keen on upkeep. That's when you typically find the nice $50-100 scores.

I dont mind answering the "what are these worth" questions about these drums, even though the answers are usually underwhelming to the owners, but I would hope that these drum sets would have more of a value in that some of these sets, like yours, are very unique in that they are a part of drum history (these are 40 year old drums) and that they are still together and usable as musical instruments would have a value that goes beyond somebody going "hey, I'll give ya xyz for that kit..."

More simply put, I just hope you have an appreciation and respect for this really awesome set. The fact that you are here and sharing it with us (the MIJunky Crew) seems to indicate that you do.

cn679,

Before I bought this kit about a month ago, I was really interested in purchasing a MIJ kit. I didn't really know what brand I wanted, but after searching the internet and want ads, I found this Stewart kit located about 100 miles from me. Once I saw the kit, I instantly fell head over heels for it.

The kit has the original cymbal mount for the bass drum, Olympic bass drum pedal and Olympic hi hat and snare stands. There is only 3 scuffs I can see in the wrap and they are only minor. The hardware has very little pitting on them. These drums have stood the test of time.

I also own Ludwig (1970), Mapex (1993) and Tama Rockstar (1998) kits as well. I wanted a kit that just wasn't as well known as these kits. So that's why I started looking for a MIJ kit.

I am truly happy with the kit, other than I want to change out the heads on them to get more of a jazz sound from them. There are mix matched heads on them now. I do have people looking for original Stewart heads for me, but I wouldn't think that many of them lasted throughout the years.

Again, I enjoy talking about MIJ drums and thank you for your compliments on my kit.

Cheers

Grantro, I'm very glad to hear that! When I see these old sets, all the ones I cant take home, I'm always hoping that they'll go to someone that loves and appreciates them. There's much more money to be made in flipping Ludwig/Rogers/Gretsch/Slingerland sets, and the MIT/Pearl Export fare is great for letting the teenagers torture, so I think of the vintage MIJ stuff as perfect for this niche market, those of us that like the unique, curious-but-cool, not perfect but definitely playable old drums.

As for me, I'm hoping that a new Garage Neo-Soul Doo-Wop Punk project is actually going to come together so I can get a chance to actually play these things more often. I love fixing them up at night in the basement, but I want people to hear what these things can do!

(Oh, and for heads, you might also want to look into the Remo Vintage A heads. Supposedly a vintage sound and definitely a vintage look.)
