Electric drums

Loading...

I was not sure where to post this, so here I go. does anyone use electric drums, I found them to be extremely important for learning new material for upcoming gigs, what is also nice is you can practice any time and no one in the house hears you.

I bought a Roland TD3 last year and it was fine, now I'm starting to have a few problems, hi hat works half the time, cymbals as well. I bet some poeple here have made their own kits, custom built, any suggestions on if I should get this repaired or go a different route? I think even companies like Roland are going cheap now, to make more, at less cost, with electric cheap is NOT a good thing.

would like to hear from electric guru's

There is a Roland VDrums User's Forum where you might find some answers. I have the HD-1 in the corner of the living room that I use just to "stay in shape".

I have 2 PD-8's and a kd-7 with the td-10 brain all roland

I paid 60 bucks with shipping for the kick and pedal (old tama pedal) and like 30 bucks each with shipping for the pd-8's use them for effects and such in songs we cover. I paid 450 total for the td-10..... so the deals are out there.... just watch ebay.... or craigslist...

The pd-8's are dual trigger and work well for cymbals as well as percussion effects....and they are clutchable.

I made a psuedo stand out of a guitar-stand and some l-rods I also bought on ebay. it holds both pd-8's with ease.

Fixing them is easy and relatively cheap....but for the prices ...I would just pick up a used one if one of mine went down

I had a custom Roland TD12 setup (with FREEKIN' heavy DW stands) and such. It was a fairly large grouping of pads (lots and lots and lots of extras). I played on it for over a year and came to the realization that it really hurt my 'feel'. I swapped back to acoustic and the cymbal felt odd under my stick. All that rubber playing really messed with my touch. Not good. I sold the entire kit the following weekend. That money rolled into a couple of Vintage kits (and a bunch of other stuff). I did hang on to my Roland HandSonic 15 and attached gadgetry and amps. I use those for a quick (throw it in the car and go) last minute cold calls. Excellent for that.

I personally will never play another E-kit again. It really funked up my touch and feel. I don't ever want to have to deal with that again. Scared the snot out of me.

That is weird about the feel.... I played a vdrum kit in a band full time for 3 1/2 years .....at the same time I had another project where I played the acoustic kit... I never noticed any lack of feel now I have a hybrid....best of both worlds VINTAGE + ELECTRONIC

You misunderstand. I played the E-kit ONLY for over a year. I had not touched an acoustic kit during that time.

I didn't misunderstand..... You had issues with the feel , I however did not.

He's not saying the feel of the drums...he is saying HIS feel FOR the acoustic drums. Playing an electronic kit exclusively will change the way you play. Ask any 12 year old who's parents bought them an electronic kit to "quietly learn on" what their first experience playing "real" drums was like then you will understand what he is talking about.

Thank you LD. That's exactly what I was saying. I had stepped away from the acoustics for a while (about a year) and when I sat behind the kit again, it felt odd under my touch. Very strange. I honestly thought I was clear, but I'm a teacher and understand how he could read my words other than how I typed them. It's not uncommon.

It is a fact that electronic drums feel different than Acoustic Drums..... When I mentioned that I played in a full time band, I mean exactly that..... 3-4 nights a week for 3 and a half years...... I'm sure I went a stretch of months without touching an acoustic kit.......

I'm not trying to invoke an argument or solicit patronization, Maybe I approached playing each as playing a different instrument. but like a bike..... FOR ME ... I never lost my feel for the acoustic drums... And honestly I cannot understand how someone could.

Now, I really enjoy integrating the electronics into the show.....from hand claps in "to much time on my hands" to big gong and metal sounds in "walk like an egyptian" (even listen to the stop part in walk like..... that metal single hit ....its in the td-10) Bongos..... cowbells.....castanets..the works.....but the coolest effect is the reverse kick..... it took me a while but I got it nailed in "RENEGADE" (the single tom hits during (8) WHOA MOMMA.....etc).....

I also enjoyed playing the td-10 full time as well when I did.
