Questions about a Gretsch 5pc set

Loading...

Hi,

I'm helping a friend post an online ad for his Gretsch 5pc set.

It has the stop sign badge #1, but I have no clue whether it's a Catalina, Renown, etc. (or whether it's birch, ash or maple) and would like to include that in the description for the ad.

Maybe someone here can help me identify it, which will help determine how much to ask for it. He was originally thinking of asking a thousand but I told him to hold off to see if I can find more info.

I was told that these are "special" features:

- 10 lugs on the bass (vs. 8)

- toms mounted on the stand (vs. on the bass), and

- dampers on the toms

Attached are 4 pics I took. Thanks in advance for any feedback :)

These are 70's drums, before Renown,Catalina,Blackhawk etc.Very nice drums, ones anyone on this Forum would appreciate.Especially in their what looks like unaltered condition. My Gretsches were from the same era,but not as well appointed as yours, with the internal dampers and such. That price would be a reallistic starting point-unless you want to trade for a 73 Rogers set!(that was a plug)

I do hope he has the bottom hoop for that floor tom. It could honestly make a big difference to someone as far as 100% originality goes. Sizes?? Looks from here like 22-12-13-16 and a Slingerland Radio King snare? Is the snare a chrome over brass, or over steel shell? ALl these questions will be asked, as this will go to someone looking for a vintage kit, and they will ask the questions, boy howdy! Finish looks amazing as well, is it Gold Nitron? Kinda hard to see from here. You may well want to post those in our "For Sale" section, they will probably sell here very quickly, if he is willing to let them go to a vintage dude or dudette out in the world. I'll bet those things boom!

Wow! Thanks for the valuable feedback so far. I'm glad I came here first before posting an ad with those pics.

This is his response to the feedback so far:

- the bottom hoop for the floor tom is missing

- yes, it's a slingerland radio king snare in the pic but it's not for sale...a different snare will be included

- the floor tom is 16" and the smaller ones are both 12", bass is 22"

- doh! yes, there are only 8 lugs on the bass! sorry! some dude that played them remarked that there were ten

- the high-hat stand will also be replaced with a different one

So obviously, I'll be taking new pics once he puts together exactly what it is he's planning to sell.

I did a google image search on gretsch drums and couldn't find any pics with the same color finish as these, so it must not be too common. If I had to describe it I'd say gold satin, but in some pics it almost looks cream...maybe due to the flash(?). I'm not sure what the official Gretsch name for the color is but gold nitro looked like it wasn't all the same color (i.e. there was a pattern) whereas this finish is uniform throughout.

Fire away with any more questions and thanks again!

The snare drum Need to see better pics of it, take a pic of the strainer and butt end! take a magnet and see if it sticks to the rims and the shell, if yes it's steel. if no then it's brass! it could be a sound king?also do the gretsch drums have paper tags inside them with serial numbers on them?

I'll take new pics, including better ones of snare drum, when he decides which one he wants to include with the set. The Slingerland in the pic apparently is not for sale.

He looked inside the floor tom and there's a paper tag with the words "Model Number" written in pencil, but no model number is shown. The tag also has a serial number 125706 on it. Is there a correlation between the serial number and the date it was made? Does it tell anything else about the set?

Is $1000 still a reasonable asking price for the set if he includes a "standard" snare drum instead of the slingerland? Should he start out asking for more?

teverson-sr said these are 70's drums, does that mean we can use the word "vintage" in the title of his for-sale ad?

Thanks again for all the useful feedback :)

NO the paper tag serial numbers are almost worhtless for dating gretsch drums, but for originality they are a dig deal, also they are 70's so yes you can use the word vintage, I need the snare drum pics to tell you which model you have, and the kit is worth the asking price by itself!

That's great to hear vintagemore, thanks!

I just wanted to make sure he's in the right ballpark with his asking price, and it sounds like he is.

I don't understand how replacing the snare drum in the pics with a different one (that he's eventually going to get down from his attic so I can take pics of it) changes the model number of the kit.

We spoke last night and he says he knows a guy that knows a guy that will sell him the bottom hoop that he's missing. Even though it's not the original one, what would something like that be worth to the overall value of the set?

Even if that deal falls thru, should he go out and try to find that bottom hoop so he can bump up the asking price?

your welcome, no changing the snare drum won't change the model # of the kit, that was for the slingerland snare drum to determine which model it was,but since he isn't selling it , it doesn't matter, the bottom rim and the tension rods would make the kit complete again, thats how it would help in the sale!also the kit may date from the late 60's to early 70's!
