Ludwig Snare Drum Round Mufflers???

Loading...

I have a stamped Jan 1971 Chrome Supra Phonic 5" x 14" snare, serial number 8471##, that is missing the muffler. The large hole is on the top for the shaft on the knob to go thru the drum, with the smaller hole on the bottom, to attach the small machine slotted head bolt thru to hold the bottom of the inside bracket. Does anyone have a clear picture of a 1971 similar snare, with the muffler intact? If you do please send me a picture of it. When did Ludwig go from the small round knob to the larger round knob? Is there any correlation between the size of the knob and whether it was mounted above or below the attaching machine bolt? Thanks.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the info. Now how about the placement of the knob's shaft in relation to the inside bracket. My snare has the larger hole for the shaft at the top, My newer Ludwig snares (1970's Acrolite with serial number 17369##, 1979 Black Beauty with serial number 19942##) all have the knob shaft going thru the bottom hole. Does the book have any details on when that changed?

Hey Kevin,Thanks for the info. Now how about the placement of the knob's shaft in relation to the inside bracket. My snare has the larger hole for the shaft at the top, My newer Ludwig snares (1976 Acrolite, 1979 Black Beauty) all have the knob shaft going thru the bottom hole. Does the book have any details on when that changed?

It only says that there were variations, but the pictured two-hole mounting scheme is knob on top. And all my Ludwig snares that have mufflers...

64 Supra... 68 Supra..... 76 Acro..... 77 Acro...... all have knob or bat on top.

Thanks Mikey. It's not really clear as a bell, is it? Does anyone have the larger knob muffler that is on the top with the mounting machine bolt on the bottom, for my snare, that they would sell? I need two. One of my other snares is a little newer Supra, size size, same B/O point corner badge, serial number 15436##, and it's missing the same muffler. I'm not sure why people take these things off anyway, but it's a pain in the butt restoring these snares and chasing around for parts. I have small knob (mounted in the upper hole) muffler assembly as trade bait.

Anyone with some pictures of the two different sizes of muffler knobs mounted in the upper position?
