From PopsOldSkins

If you can't decide, you could leave it natural and put a red glitter racing strip down the middle.Excited

FREAKIN AWESOME MAN!!

Actually I WAS thinking of a 1/2" - maybe wider- inlay of GOLD GLASS GLITTER - or sparkle - so it would fit right in with my Vintage Gold Sparkle Gretsch drums.

I know - I know = don't tamper with the "Vintage" drum BUT - it's only one little drum and it would be so nice. I'm not selling it....although I have to consider what the person down the road that ends up with drum would be thinking. It would be something along the lines of "what the hell was this guy thinking when he cut an inlay strip into this Vintage Dixieland Gretsch drum? The bastard!!"" Haha.........you never know...

What you say???????????????

I would think that as long as you don't actually inlay it, recess it into the shell, than go for it. Maybe finish the shell like you want then use the high bond tape for the racing stripe, could be very cool!

Thanks Lucky - yes - that's an option.

EGDES:

Got them all done........looks pretty good. That "thegaragedrumbuilder.com" guy's Youtube video was pretty cool and saved me redoing the edges.

I put lead pencil all the way around the drum on the outside bearing edge (high sharp area) on both heads. I did exactly like Dustin Martin suggests at 1:09 or so in this video:

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdEgiKUKqwA&feature=related[/ame].

The edges are sharp and flat now - easy!

I've painted the shell interior (secret Silver Sealer..........) - I went aroung the sticker.....did not want to mess with that one - it's old & brittle.

UPDATE:

2nd photo TUNG OIL - 3rd is after 2 coats Poly (Apr 3rd) .....very happy with the outcome so far.

Monday Apr 5 ....

3 coats of Clear Gloss Polyerethane over 4 coats Tung Oil.

Don't have all the parts to put the drum together fully but I put what I have on to see what the finish looks like so far....

I will be going NATURAL finish I believe.....

I vote naural with a tung oil finish makes the drum kit ass, and if you don't like it you can always rewrape. I know this was ask in feb and its now may but what the hey.

The sparkle wrap arrived and I did not have the heart to cover the drum. I'll save the wrap for another project....it's not going to waste that's for sure.

This is what I ended up with and I'm using it for the time being with my 58 Gretsch kit. I'm happy with the sound & the finish.

THANKS FOR VOTING

THE FINISH:

Tung Oil with two coats Varathane Clear Gloss Lacquer on top. Simple and effective. I rubbed it on with clean cotton tight weave material (old bedsheets = it worked great). I let it dry, rubbed it out and applied a couple of coats of Mother's Carnauba Car Wax .
