First commercially available brushes?

Probably only minority interest, but I felt it had to be done. I got curious about the origins of brushes one day, but, strangely, few seem to have bothered to do the research in any depth. The info is there, though.Anyway, thanks for your interest and input over the last few months. You forced me to follow up on leads that I would otherwise have ignored and, in the process, I found out a lot of info. I hope the article won't disappoint.

Your posts here have been great, and I'm sure your article will continue to enlighten us!

I won't link to my website as it's still under construction (total mess), but here's a direct link (PDF format):

Some of the notes are worth reading as they go into a little more detail. Let me know if you spot any obvious mistakes.

A supporting article outlining the evolution of the swatter will follow in a few weeks (those swatters I linked to earlier in this thread weren't the first).

Gerry – Absolutely TOP NOTCH!!! This is the definitive work on this and I believe with your precise fairness in presenting it, it will remain a definitive resource for a very long time. You wrote your *ss off. I lift my glass to you man! Beautiful!

I’m going to enjoy exploring the notes too!

Stumbled across this outfit the other day (The Viper & His Famous Orchestra):

Some bitty videos on yootoob show the drummer using the whisks as sticks (no real swish). Cool that the tradition has been revived, though...

510, don't let the views deceive you, there's hardly anyone following this thread anymore if my webstats are anything to go by! :)

Glad you like it, anyway. Brushes is a minority interest thing and there have been relatively healthy download figures coming from a jazz-orientated site I use, but it's still a niche thing it seems.

My next article will cover early brush styles, but will take quite some time to compile. The groundwork has all been done, but presenting it in document form is going to be time consuming.

Gerry - Thank you for your continued discoveries and updates to your excellent study! Three new quotes and a few more paragraphs that evidence some of those things we had considered together, Sweet!

I’m sorry it took me until today to see this as I’ve gotten busy out of town a lot these days and don’t always have access to the net. Thank you again my friend!

FYI I wrote an article for NSMD (Winter 2007) about the history of brushes including photo's of some rare examples, one dated 1913.
