Ok, here's another awsome kit. Another name I have never heard of. Might be a little pricey, but it's all there, and looks good too, other than the large crack in the bass drum wrap. Thought real hard about buying these, but too much for me, plus I would have to get them shipped. Check out the link.

Those look a lot like some drums I had - same hardware, hoops, etc. - except mine were a different wrap. Mine were missing the labels when I got them, and I never did know what the brand was other than generic MIJ. So maybe they were Winstons.
They looked nicer than they actually were. These drums were extremely cheaply made. For example, the reason the hoops look so nice and chip-free is that they are made from lightweight black plastic rather than wood. I don't know if the hoops had anything to do with it, but good luck getting anything other than a "plunk" out of the bass drum. And the cymbal mount on the bass drum was so flimsy that it could barely hold the cymbal arm firmly, let alone the weight of a cymbal - it looked like it was going to pull off and take a section of the shell with it any time you hit the cymbal. I have pretty low standards, but mine were too cheap even for me :) They did look pretty cool though...

I cant comment on the quality of the set, as I've never played one, but this looks like a Hoshino made set to me. The longer, sort of 'shark tooth' lugs are the tip off. 6 lug bass drum and the shape of the badge seem to indicate Hoshino as well. Does anyone remember seeing this design of cymbal mount and floor tom leg mounts on either a Pearl or Star made set? Seems like I have seen them before, but cant recall where.
The lugs on the snare drum, however, look very similar to the snare lugs on my earlier Pearl made Jazz Master set, the same lugs that are on the toms of the early Pearl made Clubdate copies. Though I guess even though they look the same, the design (inside) and quality of the lug could be pretty different. And the snare strainer is a common MIJ design (cant remember if it's Star or Pearl's.)
The wrap is beautiful. There was a 3 piece Winston BDP set on ebay a while back, came with nice looking faux leather drum bags, but it was a bit too expensive. I thought that one was a Star made set, but maybe I'm mistaken. Then again, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for one of the stencil brands that was made by Star to later be used by Hoshino. Pearl look over a few stencil names in the early 70s (Apollo, Stewart, etc.)
I think the Hoshino sets came out a little later, starting in the early-mid 70s? O-bop would probably know best.
Way over priced, but nice looking kit. I would love to have that floor tom, as I am looking for a 14 in WMP to go with mine. I am in the market for a 14 floor tom in WMP if anyone knows where to find it...as if that's going to happen. Many players are finding that the 3 ply shells are actually nice drums, when properly tuned and good heads on them. I use a Gretsch type edge, mixed with a TAMA round over, a hybrid design I suppose and they just sound good. I have both 14 and 16 in 3 ply, and in a blind taste test, you just think they are something other than MIJ.
The strainer, floor tom leg mounts and rail look like Pearl to me. The lugs, eh...I've seen them, but can't say for sure.

I think I was right! Check out these two pics from O-bops photobucket page:
The lugs, cymbal arm, floor tom leg mounts, even the badge shapes of the WMP Winston set match up perfectly to O-bops Hoshino set. I think this is a positive ID.

That's because you keep telling everybody! Shhhhhh!!!! Laughing H
Wow way over priced set..Winston drum's were made by Hoshino{Tama}--The set was made in the very late 60s to 1973 or 4..Shells would be 9 ply not 3 ply with -out rings..hoshino used those lugs on about 12 to 15 names of sets even pearl made sets useing the lugs{copyed of hoshino} too.Crown was one of them--lugs would have no springs to hold the inserts--Hoshino ones had springs to hold the inserts. The pearl used lugs a copy of the Hoshino ones were the same looking but came to a point at the end.Hoshino ones was flat at the end....Mikey

Mikey, are you confusing the Hoshino 'shark tooth' style lugs with the 'teardrop' (Sonor copy) style lugs on Star drums? Like on some Apollos, the Duke set, etc?
I thought there was no connection between Hoshino drums and the Hoshino corp that produced Tama... See Osaka-Bop's quote:
[B] ...The HOSHINO I am mentioning has no connection to Hoshino/STAR/TAMA whatsoever. I propose that we agree to refer to it as Hoshino/Kawai and the other as Hoshino/Star that we we can all keep it clear that they were always two separate companies and competitors...
Hmmm...

Hoshino Gakki = Star = Tama,
Hoshino Kougyou = another drum manufacturer from the early 70s who disappeared lateron. Hoshino Kougyou always just copied and mixed different hardware parts together. That company was not innovative (I guess, that's the reason why the market swept them away).
Only stating 'Hoshino' doesn't help in any discussion to clarify the real producer!

No, The lugs on the set posted and the ones i was talking about are not the "shark tooth" lugs...i was saying that Hoshino and pearl used the same style lug ..Mikey
