I have an Octa-Plus in Tequila Sunrise that makes me smile every time I look at it.

That said, if money were no object I'd probably convert it to double headed.

I love concert toms! And I'm not ashamed to admit it. :)

I'm a huge Genesis fan (and I have no shame in admitting that either), so the sound of a kit with a million concert toms is music to my ears. I love the "barking" tone that Phil Collins gets on his Gretsch set. Check out the 2007 remixed version of "Abacab" for an incredible drum sound.

After dreaming of building a concert tom setup for ages, I came across a bunch of orphaned Ludwig concert toms last summer and picked them up. I just nabbed a bass drum a couple of weeks ago, so once I'm done rewrapping my Ludwig Combo set, I'll start in on the concert toms and put together my prog rock kit. The sizes are 8/10/13/14/16/22.

I doubt I'd use it as my main kit, and I'll probably never have a gig that would call for a giant concert tom setup, but it'll be fun to play "Los Endos" in the basement.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

I only have two words in response to this thread: Phil Collins.

I have two more words: Hal Blaine. He was one of the original concert tom users with a monster kit.

mendozart - to me Hal is where the multi tom thing started. Others like Chico Hamilton were using concert toms before that and I would imagine that the first tom was a concert tom. :)

You can see the odd green color of the fiberglass in those Blaemire shells in that pic of Hal. I'm always amazed at how much Hal looks like my grandma. His mother was Rose Belsky and my grandmother was Rose Shaftsky and they both came to America from the same part of the Soviet Union at about the same time in the late 1890's.

I've always fantasized that that would make me Hal's aunt. :(

Carl Palmer. ELP were the first two concerts I ever saw. Those stainless steel drums were beautiful.

I think the multi tom thing started in Africa, or somewhere prehistoric. Have you ever met a drummer that didnt want more drums? Excited

Yeah man! That's what I'm talking about. The Concert tom love is spreading. Haha.

Hal Blaine - what else can be said. The most recorded drummer. Look at him in the pic with all those Sennhieser 421's on those concert toms. Hey Hal, can you roll around the toms for me once?

Thank You,

I was thinking of Hal Blaine when I posted "Phil Collins" but I figured it was a younger crowd on this post and I might have gotten a "who?" response...LOL!

Hal Blaine and the "Wrecking Crew" were purported to be the most recorded and also to have played on the most rock/pop hits of all time. However, I think that claim was recently over turned when the documentary "Standing in the shadows of Motown-The Funk Brothers" came out. The Funk brothers played on the most #1 hits of all time. Either way its all good.

BTW, if you haven't seen it, get the documentary, its amazing!
