By a mile the head.

I remember when I first heard Roto Toms when they came out in the 70's. I was blown away by how much resonance they had. It made me rethink how a drum works and since I'm of the mind that the vast percentage of the total sum of what you are hearing when you hear a drum is from the head.

That's why I could put a good calf heads on near any drum and be happy with the sound. The drums are minor compared to the head. The shell matters way more than the hoops. It all matters though, and I always thought Roto Toms sounded boring because the shell and the other factors add complexity.

Just my 1 guy out of 6.5 billion opinion. :)

I am referring to just the snare drum here...I agree that kicks and toms really change with various head combos, but for snare drums i,ve found that the hoops add more variation than i realized.

I had someone stipulate all the different sounds from various hoops once. I can't remember them aside from flanged hoops being more open, and die-cast being somewhat more subdued/dry. Anyone here have a good grasp on it for COB and others?

1964 Slingerland Sound King 13/15/22 Ebony Satin Stain (refin.)
1965 Ludwig Downbeat 13/16/20 Turquoise Sparkle (rewrap)
1967 Ludwig Club Date 13/20 w/16" downbeat FT in Blue Oyster Pearl
1979/80 Ludwig Classic 13/14/24 Wine Red
1980 Yamaha Rec. Cust. 12/13/16/22 Cherry Red

...plus an ever-growing snare farm... Luddy/Ayotte/Slinger/Pearl/etc.
