Concert Tom Kits

Loading...

I would like to start off by stating that I really love this forum and I do not want to start a horrible thread, but I'm interested in hearing some opinions about concert tom kits.

I own 2. A Slingerland & Ludwig.

I am aware of the sound, and the value, etc.

What I am really interested in is knowing if there is anyone who secretly has a love affair with a concert tom kit. I know the American companies sold tons of these in the 70's, and there seems to be more pics from "well-respected players" playing these back in the 70's.

I have even convinced myself that I can "hear" concert toms on many LIVE recordings from the 70's...and I don't mind that weird, thuddy, explosive tone.

Any thoughts?

Thank You,

Randy Lane

I really was suprised with the sound of a Ludwig Vistalite kit I'd recently put together with a friends 3 concert toms he had lying around. Got the bass drum on eBay and put the hydraulic heads on the toms and they sound great.

Used a tama clamp with a bass mount type cowbell holder with the parts removed off of it for the hanging floor tom clip mount on the ride stand.

I was in love with the Octa-Plus set when I first saw it in the catalog back in whatever year it was that particular catalog came out. There isn't much way to describe how many times I mentally ran up and down those tom toms in my mind -at least millions of times. In those days, two headed drums were just drums, but concert toms were like a wall of outward-pointing cannons. Large drum sets were like fortresses. I liked the look of them. I had zero idea about how reviled they would one day come to be or the sonic inadequacies of the design. I just wanted them so I could be the coolest kid ever! Obviously, I never got a set and thus never became the coolest kid ever....maybe next time! Chewie:

I have 4 toms, 10, 12, 13 and 14 that I've thought of making a set of concert toms with. They're all all old Ludwigs, newest would be 1969. The idea would be to have two cymbal stands on either side of my kick, and each cymbal stand would also support a pair of toms. I have my floor toms finished in Tahitian grass skirts, and I'd probably do the same with the concert toms. I've visualized it for years and call it the Waikiki kit. It would be for a show gig and I'd proudly overplay Wipeout fills throughout the whole gig. That would be the gig. It's pretty much inspired by the Hawaii 5-0 theme. Johnny Guerin played drums on that song and he was playing concert toms, you can hear them very clearly.

I just got this kit last thursday. It belonged to a drummer friend of mine who passed away a few yrs ago. He left them to his best friend, our keyboard player. I bought em from the keyboard player. It has 4 concert toms and the 2 regular toms have the heads and lugs off of them. The kits has 8-10-12-13-14-15 toms and 16" floor tom with a supraphonic snare and some pretty nice cymbals and 2 20" bass drums with ghost pedals. He clamped 2 ludwig double tom holders together to hold 4 toms. It looks like the Ludwig sextet kit. I could put 2 of the toms on stands and make it resemble the octoplus kits minus 2 toms. The toms sound killer, but the bass drums need something regarding the sound.

Loving the kits guys!

Is there anyone on the forum who uses concert tom kits exclusively?

I am anxious to use one of my kits on a session and try to get that 70's thuddy tone. I know you can tape them up and such...but I am wanting to experiment with different heads and mic combinations.

I have also seen pics of guys shoving the microphones right inside of the concert tom drum shell. In alot of ways this technique resembles how most people mic modern bass drums (putting the microphone through the hole as close to the batter head).

Best concert tom tone? Phil Collins, Don Henley, Billy Cobham...etc.

Any ideas?

I have a Tama Imperialstar version of the octa plus. Midnite Blue. I really like the color. I have toyed with putting bottom heads on, but what to do on the smaller toms as Tama mounted the lugs a bit further off the bearing edge to offset the look. It works for the concert toms, but I don't know what or how to do the smaller drums and I hate offset lugs so that's not an option.

I am trying to talk myself into just selling them and finding something else. I just don't know if now's the right market for them......

I had to change far ther to further because of the 4 letter combo in the first word... hehe

I think I am going to reconfigure this kit. I have a extra double tom holder I am going to find a stand that will fit it and mount 2 of the toms on the stand and line them up in a single line. I will have 2 toms on each bass drum and the last 2 on a stand. Question is this: Which 2 toms should I mount on stands, the 8 and 10 or the 14 and 15? I could call it a Sexta-Plus!

I have a kit that contains pieces of an Octoplus kit.

Ludwig 24/8/10/13/15/20.

Yes...that is a 20" floor tom! 20x18 to be particular.

The cool thing about this kit is the options it allows me.

I have used the 20" FT as a bass drum, as cocktail drum and a good ole' floor tom. In addition, I can play around with various tom combinaations for different situations. Now, I haven't gigged this kit in a few years...but...I like having options.

Here is a pic of the monstor rock configuration.
