i think i will keep it and play it. as for the SNARE, it has the most awsome sound . its sort of a crack but with a real deep sound, probably because of the thick metal hoops. the snare wire is very tired and will need some kind of refit in time but i got a mate who will hopefuly be able to doctor an old snare wire and fabricate the ends. i do enjoy playing so much but i get worried at times because we play some prety rough dives and i worry mr numpty will fall on top of it. for the real rough places i will use my tama rock custom plus my clip on mics wont clip onto the sonor so its a long task. every day i look on the gallery here to see some truely awsome kits. this site and its members are fantastic. thanks to all concerned...trev
Hi,
I have the exact same kit with the yellow and black. but have a ludwig snare with it. Anyone know how much i would get for it?
Thanks,
Matthew
first post here so hi to all. i bought this kit at a gereral auction and it looked like an ordinary plain black drum kit covered in black felt. paid £30 and when i got home i peeled the felt off and was left with this. im gigging it and it has the most powerful awsome sound ever. please can somwone tell me a little about it and what it may be worth. cheers guys .http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q235/trevthedrummer/my1960ssonor.jpg
I'm sorry, but I have to hate you now.
Nice going.
I have a early 60's sonor teardrop kit I restored, meaning I removed all the heads, lugs, mounts etc....... I cleaned and polished each an every piece. Waxed the shells and replaced a few rusty tension rods. The sonors are built so well, everything comes apart and goes right back together with no problems, but watch out, you might get addicted and end up seeking the original stands, pedals, cymbals etc...... They're out there if you look!!!
Gorgeous Sonor kit! The teardrop kits are really undervalued from a vintage point of view except for the Jazz sizes in Rosewood. Wondering if you like the sound of the snare? I have the Harlem Star Kit in the rare gold sparkle pin stripe wrap. A weirder wrap I have never seen. Like you, I considered a re-wrap then thought better of it because of the reasons posted in this thread. Here's a pice of the snare and tom. Truly drums made for jazz with the beechwood 9-ply 13X8 tom and the 4X14 snare. Enjoy! BTW does anyone know the name of this gold sparkle & black pin-stripe wrap or see it in a catalogue anywhere?Kellyj
I got this exact same set. with a 50's snare...Im not sure but I think I read on a british site that the finish is called: "Cabana Leopard"....I wish some of the Sonor geeks could clarify this for us...
The 1960 catalog shows that finish and they have it listed as.
Cubana (Leopard Affect)
(I have a poor scan of it, but that is what I see it could also be Cabana, but the Leopard Affect is in parentheses in the catalog)
David
Thanks Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wasnt that far, uh?
Hey Dave
any chance the "Leopard affect" might be "Leopard Effect"?
Vin
Can anyone tell me what the bracket on the bass drum is for, in his picture he has nothing coming out of it. Would this be used as a cymbal mount? i think its abit thin to mount a second Tom.
Much appreciated
Matthew
