What should i do with these Premiers?

They are MDF, from what I can see. Still, they would make a great "Extreme MAkeover of the Drum Type"...you could sell it to A&E...hey, maybe we should all come together and do a production with Mike Rowe and sell it to A&E. I need the money really bad. As a matter of fact, we could have him travel to each of us, doing segments on each of our unique talents, and sell it to A&E, and put the money in our new company...

Back in June '09, I went to a garage sale a local collector/dealer was having. He had a NIB Stagg set, missing parts of course, and I knew absolutely nothing about them. I had never heard of them before. They were the absolute worst looking shells I have ever seen, including most of the 40+ year old "toys", short of the lovely set of "gas lights" from the ebay listing yesterday. They came from the factory with some unique features: pre-seperating plies, edges that defy description, in that they indeed looked as though someone had cut them with something resembling a router with a spoon attachment, if you can immagine what that would look like, and and the lightest and cheesiest hardware ever, pre-cracked of course.

It's a shame that drums like this were produced under the premier name.

Personally, I'd salvage all the hardware and use them on another project - you know, one your not to purist about. Say you have a quality set of shells, just use this hardware on it. Even on cheap basewood kits Premier hardware was decent.

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer
Premier Resonator 22, 16, 14, 13 poly creme/black
Zickos 22, 16, 14, 13, clear acrylic and snare

I thought about scraping the whole kit and sell the hardware on ebay. I am going to think about this for a while. I heard on another forum that these drums sound very good. We all study drum shell wood and chase the desirable and collectible drums. Im guessing that the particle board is harder than any plywood. Not sure how it keeps from coming apart. These may sound incredible. Isnt that what they are supposed to do? Im gonna research it some more.

Have you ever played Acousticon drums? They sound excellent! But,in my opinion,Remo seems to want to cheap out on their hardware, even on the highline stuff. So,for THAT reason I've never considered purchasing one. This opportunity you've gotten into could be beneficial-lemonade out of lemons.Strip it,reassemble it and play it.Whats that-a rainy afternoon?

Here is a short tale:Four years ago I purchased a late 70's MIT Royce set from a friends' uncle for $100,basicly to get the cymbals-an A crash and hi-hats.9 ply lauan with hex-rod mounts and spindly stands-except for a really nice Remo external spring hi hat stand which is the best Ive ever used!So-what to do-flip for $100 and keep the cymbals? Then there would be no tale!Strip the shells down, paint the interiors with acoustic type grey primer (hard surface),flatten and recut the edges, clean and reassemble using Tama type L-rod mounts for practical reasons(they fit over the existing holes with very minor hole expansion).I also replaced the bass drum with an 80's Export, which cost the same as replacing the spurs and tom mount. Also bought Maple hoops. These drums ended up being my main GB gigging kit!Very round,Eagles-like tone which has been complimented on without even asking! The moral of the story-try it!

I could imagine that as hard and impervious particle board is, perhaps the shells may resemble Birch in sonority??

Who know until you try...

Birch being used for mainly rock because of its attack and sound projection and is not known for warm woody resonance.

Maybe before re-wrapping you could try a shell for tuning and sound characteristics? Too see if if suits the sound you want...

My Daughter's fiance' gave me a royce kit a few months ago. He helped a friend of his move and his friend gave them to him. The kit was almost complete, with the exception of missing T rods on the bass reso side and no floor tom legs. I had a set of late model ludwig floor tom llegs that were a **** hair too big, so I drilled the floor tom brackets out a tiny bit and I had some T rods and claws I put on there, (later regretted because they are oem vintage ludwig t rods, aand claws) I gave them to my nephew, along with some very nice, but cracked sabian cymbals. He beats the hell out of them. Im not really looking for a players kit. I just thought I would like to have some Premier drums for my collection. This Premier kit is also missing one lug.

I already got the generic t rods and claws. I told him and his mom that if he really got into playing drums, I will get him something better later and take the royce back and salvage my parts, if he decides he doesnt want to play drums I get them back also.

Hey guys,

I started this topic on a UK drum forum."Are These Premiers Made From Particle Board" Even the British guys are perplexed about these Premiers. It will be Very interesting to find out what these are made of and why they were made this way. Im sorta thinking I might remove the wrap from the rest of the drums and put them back together naked. Or I could wrap them in mod sparkle for $59.

maybe I can find some real wrap a drum supplier is closing out. I have never rewrapped a complete kit. This kit would be good practice for rewrapping. Then I could give them to my nephew if he keeps his interest in drumming.
