Vintage ludwig head, modern equiv?

Loading...

I have an old coated ludwig weather master tom tom head on my some of my ludwig toms and I really like it. What would be a modern equivalent? I am not sure what weight it is. I would like to stay with ludwig heads on this kit, but am open.

FWIW, I am going for that 60's motown/max roach thing...

This is the look of the logo on my heads:

Ludwig still makes these heads right in the monroe NC plant, or you can buy vintage heads.

The original weathermaster heads were all medium. Heavy didn't come into play until the late 60's. With that said, if I was to recommend a modern weathermaster to use, go with the Heavy. Its the same weight as a Remo Ambassador, the medium is the same as a Diplomat, which is rather thin. The mediums dent easily unless playing with light sticks and at soft-moderate volumes for jazz. Unless you are doing that kind of playing, and it sounds like you're not, I'd use the heavy heads. I'm using them on my black panthers and they sound great, tune up quickly, fit well, and are pretty durable......but I'm not a real heavy hitter either. :p
