MIJ stencil v.4 - Tempro BDP 3 piece

Well, this might be it for cn679. It might finally be time for me to hop off the MIJ train... Yesterday I found, and today I bought, what I have been waiting for ever since I realized that 60s MIJ drums were for me: a late 60s Pearl made Black Diamond Pearl (a Tempro) 3 piece, 12/14/20" set.

It isn't perfect (but who are we kidding, neither am I.) The only remaining badge is on the floor tom, the hoops show some age/pitting, the tom mount is some kind of Tama thing (though I'll probably use a snare stand anyway) the BD t-rods are different on each side, and one BD hoop isn't original (though, remarkably, I have a matching hoop that I bought about a year ago as I clairvoyantly knew this day would come.)

It has Pearl's Slingerland copy lugs, which I have found to be a bit more substancial than the Star Sling copies. Looks to me like 3 plies with re-rings, but I'm not 100% sure. Original Sound Master batter head on the bass drum and, I'm happy to report, Vintage Emperors on the toms (nice choice.) And the wrap has the larger cut 'diamonds' with lots of color variation and 'figure.' It's very beautiful.

I haven't had a chance to set it up with cymbals and give it a real workout, but I have whacked them a few times and I can say... it's not quiet. (I'll report more on the sound when I can get it tuned up and dig into it a bit.) I cant wait to get it set up with my '66 Supra! I dont care what anyone says, it's gonna be Motown in my mind! The Four Tops meet punk rock! It's too late to turn back here we go...

I really do think that this is the last set I will be buying for quite a while. I may pick up a wretched orphan project to restore from time to time, but for now, I am completely happy.

Special thanks to my beautiful girlfriend, Sarah (Valentine's Day in March!), and the good people at Trade Up.

Please enjoy the photos, there will likely be many more to come.

**NB: Seems that this is the last of my MIJ stencil volumes, except that I have one last thing I'd like to share that I am pretty sure will be of interest to this community... something that I very much doubt any of you have seen before, any of you...

Congratulations!Clapping Happy2

I really do can imagine how you feel today (should be the same like at the day when I bought back my first drumset after approx. 12 years without it).

Stay tuned!

Your sense of humor is refreshing. I love the look of that kit. Was the Minnie Pearl Tag on the 12 intentional? Nice. Very nice.

I have been keeping this one in my watch, waiting for him to come to his senses as I have already contacted him and told him he is high. When it first came up, he had it at 129++ If I were you, and if you want a matching snare, offer him like 70 including shipping, and make sure he understands fully that you offer includes shipping. This is a very nice drum, I have one very similar to it and it sounds great. I may even have some lugs, but I am sure you do. The rings on this snare are the big thick opnes and should be very easy to work if needed. Now you have a BDP and WMP. Very nice!!! How many WMP do you have, still have both kits? BTW, even if the size is off, iot is a snare and you can't really tell from more than two feet.

Thanks for the responses!

O-bop, below is a pic of the badge on the floor tom. The bass and rack tom badges were removed, but the glue smudges are still there and clearly show the circle with the vent hole in the lower left portion of the circle, so I have no doubt that they are the matching drums. (But out of curiosity, did any other branded Pearl stencil have this type of badge?)

As we have seen, some of the stencil names are somewhat regional (Zim Gar in New York, Apollo in St. Louis, etc) I wonder if Tempro was sort of 'based' near the West Coast? Through absoulute coincidence, this has ended up being my 3rd Tempro 14" floor tom. The other being the blue sparkle and then the banana wrapped gold sparkle orphans. (I'll have to take a pic of that set!)

Mcjnic, the tag on the rack tom is the actual price tag from the store. Left it on for the photo as a nod to the fact that I literally just bought it. I flipped it around so the price wouldn't show. I didn't pay all of what they were asking, but it was still more than the conventional wisdom around here says I should have paid (sorry, John... but its BDP!)

And John, looks like that snare just sold. Its funny, I have seen that snare and wanted to bid on or buy a few other BDP snares on ebay just in case this came along, but now I dont feel like I'm in any hurry to get a matching snare. I most likely will at some point, but for now I think the set looks pretty nice with a chrome snare. Maybe it's the way the lighter part of the pearl compliments the chrome.

(Also, yes, I still have both WMP sets. The WMP Stewart BD sounds awesome, even though I hate the heads that are on it - SK2s, ported reso. The floor tom isn't cooperating, probably because of the snare beds. The toms both need Emperors, the Fiberskyns on them just sound plasticy, toy like, just not right... The Apollo WMP set still needs some work, probably the whole lugs off deal, I just haven't had the time.)

Thanks for the responses! Mcjnic, the tag on the rack tom is the actual price tag from the store. Left it on for the photo as a nod to the fact that I literally just bought it. I flipped it around so the price wouldn't show. I didn't pay all of what they were asking, but it was still more than the conventional wisdom around here says I should have paid (sorry, John... but its BDP!)Sometimes, it's just the right one, and the money is not the object. It's the keeping the public from thinking they are worth drug money that concerns me about us doing our part to keep them down to the rational, affordable level. Hard to find, complete kits can be just that, hard to find and sometimes we are willing to go a little higher. (Also, yes, I still have both WMP sets. The WMP Stewart. The floor tom isn't cooperating, probably because of the snare beds.

OK, in order to deal with this issue, and we had this discussion already, but if you use a filler that is NOT "Plastic Wood" you should be able to remove it easy enough. Or, use the FT from the other kit and keep this one as is and readily available to flip the lids of the audience when going into hyper-drive with a monster snare sound during that really cool Scarlet/Fire run. Nice! That badge seems earlier than the Tempro badges I have seen here so far. I will keep my eye out for them for you. It`s one I haven`t seen (shape, design) on Pearl drums before. That`s good in my opinion- more for us to look for. Keep us up to date on em

Just because I had the camera out, thought I'd take a family portrait.

14" Tempro floor toms: BDP, blue sparkle, and banana (gold sparkle underneath)
