12" leedy Snare

Loading...

OK Y'all I have had this on a shelf for quite sometime now. I got it off of ebay a long time ago. Its a 12X7 leedy snare. According to the drum identification page, this is a 1920. The top hoop is broke. There is a bracket for the snare adjustment, but no snare butt, and no holes to indicate there ever was a butt. I can get a new hoop for about $35. How the hell does the snare work on this? Does anyone know anything about this drum?

Thanks for any input,

Pop

Poppy, great leedy drum. what size is it??, the way the snare work's are you need gut snare's and they are held with a rubber or leather guide that you will run the gut snares thur it, the snare gate off the rim and the snare strainer will hold them in place, i'm looking for a pair to photo for you, do you understand my rambling??

Start by putting the hoops on the drum and tensioning them. Now imagine a half a popsicle stick with a row of holes drilled in it, and several pieces of cat gut or wire starting from the throw (which isn't a throw but just a tensioner), going through the snare-gate slots in the hoop and the holes in the popsicle stick, and back to the tensioner where they get clamped down. When the tensioner is tightened, the wires will pull the popsicle stick against the snare-gate slot in the hoop, but won't pull it through, and the wires will be against the bottom head. It will sound muddy - it isn't going to sound like a modern snare drum, but it never did.

I think they actually used leather instead of wood as the "popsicle stick". I've seen pics of this arrangement on the web somewhere; I bet you can find it if you search.
