My first restoration project. A 1959/1961 Ludwig

Hi gang. Been a lurker for some time and I thought it was about time to join and say hello.

Big thanks to all that make this forum work. It's been a big help to me since my interest in vintage drums.

I really just got started so I'll post a few pics and ask a few questions along the way.

I may be able to contribute a couple things right off the bat.

I tried Cerama Bryte Ceramic Cooktop cleaner on a lug and it worked great. I still ended up buying some Brasso since it seems to be the overwhelming choice here. I would say they both worked about the same.

I also found Ajax Dishwashing Liquid (and water) to be a great pre-soak. Probably the same and the Dawn that was recommended (grease cutter). It really cut through the grime and even dissolved a bunch of the surface rust.

Unfortunately, I stripped the drums before I took pics so the only pics I have are the ones the seller used on eBay.

So far, I have a list of about 15 questions I am going to need answers to but for now, I would like to identify the kit (if, indeed it is a kit and not just orphans).

The 14x20 kick and the 9x13 rack are both dated 1961. The snare is a transition badge so it's 59-59.

Could that have been sold as a kit? There is no floor tom.

The snare is a cheapo 6 lug student (I think) but the kick and rack are not like any student kit I saw in the early 60's catalogs as they have the standard classic lugs.

The most identifiable feature is the fact that the kick drum has 4 spurs. I have not seen any Ludwigs from that era with 4 spurs. I did see an 80's Sextette (or close) kit that had 6 rack mounted toms balancing on the kick drum. Pretty strange kit. That kick had 4 spurs.

Anyway, here are a couple pics to start. I did do a before and after on a lug that I cleaned.

Once again big thanks to all the people (mods and members) who make this forum work. What a great resource.

1St off Welcome glad to have you with us, let me start off by answering some of your questions, this could be a real kit, the transition badge 6 lug snare drum would fetch towards $200.00 no so cheap is it? the bass drum and tom are called super classics top of the line they are, your snare drum is the pioneer model, the back set of spurs was probably added after words, not factory stock, does the bass drum have a cymbal mount on the left side??thanks

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

does the bass drum have a cymbal mount on the left side??thanks

That was 1 of my 14 questions. LOL

It has a hole and it was plugged with a bolt and washer.

The hole is a single hole 5/8". That's not the typical pattern for the standard cymbal arm mount. The standard cymbal arm mount has 2 small holes (as far as I have found out so far).

Here is a picture of the shell with some notes.

You'll also see that someone moved the rail consolette mount from one standard location to another. I see several transition kicks that have the rail mounted right between the lugs real close to the hoop (location 2). Later kits have the rail mounted much closer to the center of the drum and higher toward the badge (location 1).

Not to swing topics but I have run into a small problem.

I am cleaning the washers that go with the spur mounts and they (as do all the screws that hold the lugs) have a powdery white substance on them.

I'm not sure if that's corrosion or if it's some kind of powder galvanizing of the era.

If someone would take a quick look at the attached pic and tell me if I have just polished the galvanizing off the washer. LOL

It sits next to the others that I have not polished yet.

It's the obvious one on the right. :)

Thanks again gang.

The single hole for the telescoping cymbal mount is probably original as are the 4 telescoping spurs. There has been some debate regarding Ludwig's use of 4 straight spurs on earlier bass drums (usually 20"), but I have owned such kits (one bought new in the early 60's) and have seen a couple more.

By the way, welcome and nice find!

Stallwart, thanks didn't know that about the 20" bass drums with the 2 leg sets, thanks, kapperdog, that is just corrosion, either sand it off or cleaner of your choice, look in the gallery my ludwig kit like yours is there, thanks,

your snare drum is the pioneer model

That was my first thought but didn't the Pioneer snare have a "baseball bat" muffler?

And, a little "knobby" on the snare throw off arm.

I see snares like this on eBay and the seller is calling it a Pioneer but the old catalogs here show a different throw and the BB muffler on the Pioneer snares I saw.

Also, just an FYI for anyone reading. I am looking for a 14 or 16 floor tom in black diamond pearl to complete this kit.

Thanks again gang. What a group. :)

I have a......'58 or so Super Classic that has the same muffler on it. So it could be original. Throw looks fine to me.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco

70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

More [good] news. I found a faint date on the snare of MAR (or MAY) 22 1960.

A little more indication that it might be a real kit.

Not that it matters all that much. But, it's neat to know the facts about your kit.

I always say, "There's more to playing with drums than just playing drums". LOL

Thanks for the confirmation. I have been watching eBay for a straight cymbal mount but, everything so far is the "L" mount style.

Just curious (if you remember). Where was the rail consolette mounted on your 4 legged kit?

My second post above has a picture of my shell with 2 rail locations.

Thanks

Thanks, thanks, thanks a thousand times, gang. :)
