Okay, What the heck are these Ludwigs?

Loading...

I am getting these drums for free from a friend. Can anyone tell me what sort of weird marching or gong bass drum concert toms they are? I assume from marching band use? Here is a message from my buddy telling me what he knows about them:

one is cracked. 2 are 21 inches across, 1 is 24 inches across. all 3 are 12 deep. marching band makes sense. My friend said he may have one more.

So...looks like I could get 4 of them for free. Kinda cool. Not sure what I would use em for though....maybe just use the badges and parts and try to flip the shells. Not sure.

Any thoughts?

Marching Quads-pretty common in the drum and bugle corps circuit.

They are huge. I played quads and tri toms in band back in the day, and we never had 24 inch toms. I have never even seen toms that big. So...tho they might be common to you....its insanity to me.

Anyway....I have a feeling my next question is going to be "how the heck could I adjoin two of these 24 inch puppies to make a 24x24 monster amber vista bass drum?"

Whoa! A 24" X 24" kick drum makes my mouth water. Bonham would be jealous!!!

I imagine there must be a way to join two together. You may have a seam, but who cares.

Epoxy, acrylic welding????

Not sure. You know how they make bop "nesting kits" that have the bass drum shells that come apart in the center to hold the toms inside for transport?

I am thinking something similar for these.

Not sure how you drill acrylic though. Is there a special bit needed? I would have to install the connecting clamp system and some bass drum spurs. Other than that they should work fine I would think.

I've used new carbide tip drills in the past that worked well on Dragon Drums acrylic shells. Taking great care whilst praying and with a grimaced facial expression seemed to help. Also, start with a pilot hole to accurately center each hole.

Hey Ad, Ludwig never made a 21" drum..I think the sizes may be wrong..iam thinking the 21 could be a 18" drum or a 20"...the two 24"s could be a custom order ..Do they have wood rims? ludwig never made a 24" metal rim... Mikey

I assume that he is measuring the 21 inch drums wrong. I didn't think they ever made a 21, but then again these are weird marching drums so who knows.

I would assume that they are 20 or 22 inch drums.

None have wood rims. One has a steel hoop. I will have to wait until I get them to be able to tell you more!
