Seriously, Sudari....You're snare is a Dynasonic, If your snare is a Big R, with all original parts on a good day, $200-$300.
Rogers Sensodyne COB Big "R", 14x5,5why you think that is dynasonic not sensodyne. sorry my stupid question
No such thing as a Rogers "Sensodyne". Sensodyne is a toothpaste brand here in the USA.
Rogers made a Super Ten, A Dynasonic, A Powertone, a Luxor, and a Holiday model snare drum among others, but no "sensodyne".
Hey y'all. I have a question about retrofitting a regular snare to a Dynasonic without the rail. I bought a retrofitted Dyna off ebay, and a regular snare system had been attached to the drum. After changing out the snare head, the snare is completely choked and unusable. The plastic strap bits are really tight on the edges of the head but the snare wires have no tension. Is this due to the very shallow snare beds? Is there anything I can about this? I've heard people say they have successfully fit regular snares to this drum before despite the lack of bearing edges.
Thanks!
Benj
I don't know why you are havving trouble, Acrolites have no beds. And
I have a stack of old MIJ wood snares, and half of those with no beds, so I don't get why you are having a choking issue. Please, don't take this as an insult, but go to the Evan s site and use Bob's video to tune it, maybe? I know many of my snares, wood and metal, have no beds. I have a steel snare no beds, see? It makes no sense that this would cause a complete shut out. Is the head too tight on the shell? That could cause it, uneven tension around the hoops? I know you probably know these things, but from an outsiders point, we might think of something you missed....

Not true. The Acrolite snares do have snare beds...they are not as pronounced as say a Gretsch snare, but they do have a deeper bed than a Dynasonic does. Any snare drum does, because a Dynasonic snare has NO snare beds at all! This was part of how they got their sound. You didn't need them when the snares were tensioned on the snare frame, as opposed to "conventional" snare wires. The snares are designed to just barely kiss the snare head when adjusted and used the way they were intended. A Dynasonic with "conventional" snares fitted will always sound choked because there are NO snare beds. The beds are there to help the conventional type wires contact the center of the head. Without the beds, no snare wire contact in the center of the head! Hence the "choked" sound.
I know the puresound repro wires are expensive, as are the snare frames, but this snare sounds best when they are fitted with ORIGINAL type snares. So sensitive and crisp. If I were you, I'd save some $$ and hunt down the correct parts rather than just fit generic snares....you'll never be satisfied with the drum that way. Don't take my word for it....dig out some old Buddy Rich records or Louis Bellson records from the early-mid 1960's and listen to the snare sound. Thats a Dynasonic at its best....
I rebuilt one a couple of years ago and sold it (I bought it to flip it) but for the short time I had it, I loved how great it sounded. Even slightly better than my favorite supraphonic (which I will NEVER sell)....if I get the chance, I'm getting one again! Excited
