Old K's can break your heart!

I'm not any kind of cymbal expert. I am probably an alien, here, because I actually LIKE Avedis Zildjians! ;)

Here is a serious story that recently happened to a friend of mine. He had a beautiful old K. I have no idea how much it weighed or what the stamp was or anything. But it was a really nice sounding cymbal. This guy treated all his stuff very well. He used it, but he used it properly.

One day, after God only knows how many years since it was first made, it suddenly developed a crack about halfway through the middle of the cymbal -running, circumferentially, about 6 inches wide -just like *snap* and it was there.

This cymbal had been his prize drum-related object. It is retired, now. It doesn't sound the same -obviously.

It was heartbreaking to be sure. As with any old K, they are often so unique, there is no replacing them. That's the curse of the handmade instrument, I suppose.

Anyway, I was just stopping in to say hello.

carry on

There's a way to fix that so the it's usable again and the sound is only minimally compromised. I specialize in such things.

It's something closely related to brain sugery, but it works.

Nah, this isn't cymbalholic. You're in Avedis-friendly country here! :D

I don't think they would even let me join, there. But I do, however, play jazz. Go figure! :D

By the way, Drumaholic, I just contacted the guy from my story about the cracked old K. He IS interested in getting it fixed if possible. What exactly would be involved with exploring you taking a look at and possibly fixing the crack for him? Please PM me with more information -or post it on this thread and I will check back. Thanks.

I've not played all sorts of old Ks to have any meaningful basis to give a considered opinion, but I do have one 20'' old K and it sounds only marginally better to me than my zilco and not nearly as good as my brother's avedis, which I grant is a 22''. I'd take 60s avedis any day for price and quality.

You need to be aware that not all old K's were created equal. The same holds true for any other hand hammered cymbals including old A's. Some are not anything I would want to own, and others are sublime and sound like they could be God's own ride cymbals.

Knavel,

I could totally take that piece of junk 20" old K off your hands if it's taking up too much space.
