I'm New! Help! Can my 20" Slingerland sound fat?

Loading...

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and excited to get some info!

I have a 1960's Slingerland kit, 20" bass drum, 13" tom, 16" floor tom.

I can not get a good, fat low punch out of the 20" bass drum. I do not have calf skin heads, but I currently have an Aquariun Super Kick II on the beater side and a Remo FiberSkyn on the outside.

I have tried all sorts of beaters and skins, I have tried tuning both heads low, but there seems to be a lack of low end punch. More of a wobbly tone. It sounds big from the outside sometimes (better than sitting behind it) but it's not matching the sound I want. (Earl Palmer, New Orleans jazz/blues)

Any suggestions?

Good place to buy calf skins?

Also, what kind of hi-hats was Earl Palmer playing? They sound big and thin.

Thanks a lot,

Ben M

Try a Remo Ambassador tuned low and a sheep wool beater.

Best kick sound I've gotten (on a 22") is with a Superkick II batter and a Regulator reso head. Tune the batter just past the point of wrinkles, and the reso a tad higher. This is a rock sound, low, very little ring, and a nice balance of punch and click.

I have a Superkick I and Regulator on a 20" kick, but I tune it higher for more punch and resonance (like a jazz kick sound).

Are you going for a FAT live sound, or recording sound? For live, you will likely have to tune up a bit. Too flabby and you just get the "click" from the beater. Also, you can't beat a really nice kick-centric mic for a good live sound. The AKG D112 is an industry standard kick mic.

For recording, a Superkick II with Regulator reso and possibly a bit of damping should get you there. I have a Superkick II and an Attack Reso (with my own fabricated damping rings) on a 22" Kent kick in the studio currently. I could not get the low end I wanted out of it until I used the AKG D112. The low end was there, but my other kick mic just wasn't picking them up.

Hope this helps.

It's been my experience that a 20" will provide more punch than a 22", but lacks the lows.

As an experiment....flip the F'skin to the batter side and back it with a felt strip horizontally across the center. Put a Falam patch or a felt patch where the beater hits.

Then go with a lighter res head, unported....like maybe an Ambassador Smooth White or an Evans G2 Coated.

(Basically, you are livening up the batter head and thinning down the res head...more vibration'll be going on, and it may well make the bass drum sound more lively...the felt strip and patch will keep it from getting too ringy; the patch increases the punch of the attack).

IMHO...I think calfskin is gonna be a waste of your time and $.....and not get you near the sound you are trying for.....

I was going to say that having that F'skin on the reso side is killing your "fatness". As a batter, they're great, but they're a bit too heavy to be used as a reso head unless you're looking to tame your sound down.

If you do switch them out and use a thinner reso head and you think it sounds too big, then put a felt strip on the reso head too. If THAT is still too resonant/boomy and you want a punchier sound, then I'd recommend porting the reso.
