Gretsch Round Badge Snare Drum - Question

Loading...

Hello,

recently I got a hold of a Gretsch Round Badge Snare Drum.

It sound very nice. The only thing is that the shell seems to have crack pretty much in the middle going all the way around the shell.

It actually looks like the shell is put together from 2 parts.

Does anyone know if that is normal? Or is the drum broken?

Here are some pictures:

Thanks for your help!

From mcjnic

Looks like a ply crack.

That is what I was afraid of, too.

But I'm not absolutely sure.

It is very clean and straight. Also the silver paint was painted over the crack.

At the crack there is no wooden color visible.

This wouldn't be the case if the crack was new.

It could be a seam where the inner ply was joined to make the width.

Someone painted over the ply crack. I would have a hard time believing that Gretsch's contracted shell builders would purposely build a shell like that...or that Gretsch would have okay'd it. It's contrary to how the shells are put together.

Also the orange paper label is sticking on the crack which means that it has been put there after the crack was painted over.

And by the way the crack probably goes through all plys.

I'm not sure. I'd have to take off the wrap to be certain. But one can feel a little grain through the wrap.

That is known as a broken drum. It's a snare drum which means it takes a heavier tension. Repairs are not likely.
